Turner Students recently had a poetry contest in their English classes. They competed to earn a spot in the "school" competition that was held this past Thursday in the Turner Art Room of the school. Six individuals and one class participated in the competition. Three students were declared winners at the Turner School in the local Geographic Bee held this week. Shay Humphreys was declared the winner, while second place went to Chantry Jorgenson and third to Shane Kimmel. Humphreys won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance at a $50.000 college scholarship. Tom and Lucy Fairbank attended basketball games this weekend. Keep working hard, Tornadoes!! Virginia McCracken was to Chinook to the ballgame on Saturday. She especially enjoyed listening to her granddaughter, Nicole McCracken, sing the National Anthem prior to the game. Rennay Watkins spent Sunday night with Grandma and Grandpa Fairbanks. The Hogeland/Turner Lions Club hosted their annual New Year's Eve party this past Thursday evening. They served a delicious pork dinner with potluck side dishes. The Turner Public School hosted a concert for everyone in the community to enjoy before their Christmas break began. All grades, kindergarten through sixth grades sang prior to Santa making his yearly visit and to listen to all the children’s wishes. The American Lutheran Church W.E.L.C.A. hosted a Women's and Girls Tea this past Sunday at the Church in Turner. The fellowship hall was beautifully decorated by members of the church. Kirsti Cederberg read a couple readings/stories while another group of ladies prepared a humorous holiday skit. The Jr. High Tornadoes competed last weekend in tournament action. There was a Pep Rally held in their honor during the school week for the students, staff and community members to attend. The recent Pep Rally was a fun event for all the students, parents, and staff at Turner to attend. One of the activities that was done was a basketball competition mixed in with some fun which included spinning on a bat, shooting a free throw, running to the other side, taking a fruit and passing it under a chin, and finally ending up unfolding a frozen T-shirt and wearing it down to the other side of the gym to the finish line. Cancer Awareness has recently been shown at the Turner Public School when one of their teachers was diagnosed with cancer. The business teacher, Mr. James Bowers, decided he'd take it upon himself and fellow friends and neighbors to help his co-worker out. The Turner School recently was privileged to have the honor of having Mr. Monte Yellow Bird, aka, Black Pinto Horse visit their school. On November 15 the Big Flat Catholic youth traveled the Big Flat collecting food for the Harlem Food Bank. With monetary donations received from some community members they were able to shop for nonperishable food items and turkeys before they delivered to the food bank. The day was a success as they delivered 1395 pounds of food, including 12 turkeys. Eleanor Johnson Harmon Bickel turned 100 years old on September 16, 2015. She was born in Norma, ND on September 16, 1915, the first of four children. She moved with her family in 1928 to Hogeland, MT. She was in the first graduating class from Hogeland High School in 1933. She went on to college to receiver her college degree from Northern Montana College in Havre and for several years taught at various grade schools in Blaine County.
