Before coming to Big Sandy, I worked with kids in a mental health facility. Most of the kids were pretty ordinary but had abusive or difficult upbringings. The result of their terrible life experiences was often a great deal of anger and dysfunction. It was a difficult job because we worked with kids that lived at the facility. Their parents weren’t there to care for them, so we had to fill in the best we could. The hardest part of the job was that we had to deal with clients at their worst. It became very easy to shift our mindset from one whe...

  • Big Flat Catholic Kids collect food for the local food pantry

    Diana Maloney|Nov 20, 2019

Holidays are a happy time where families gather and have a big meal to give thanks. But, that isn't the case for all families. Some find themselves either alone or have the family but can't make ends meet to afford a big meal. That's where the food pantry comes in. The food pantries are there for the less fortunate, or for those who just can't get food to eat. The Catholic youth of the Big Flat had a food drive this past Sunday. They hit the roads in the Big Flat community where they collected...

    Diana Maloney|Nov 20, 2019

The Students and staff of Turner wore matching shirts to show support of Diabetes. Since one of their own Tornado has Diabetes, they wanted to show her support with this illness. There are approximately 1.5 million people in the United States that are diagnosed with Diabetes each year. It is important to be aware of this illness and know the facts about it since it is such a growing illness. The month of November is Diabetes Awareness month and so it's perfect timing to learn more about...

  • North 40 Outfitters: Ready to serve the Hi-line

    Kody Farmer and Amanda Haney|Oct 30, 2019

Long time residents of the Hi-line can remember the old Big R store location in downtown Havre. The store seemed to have it all when I was a kid growing up in the 1980's. The store, originally built in 1948 eventually relocated to the Havre Holiday Village Mall, exponentially increasing its space both within the store itself, and outside as well. For many it seemed the new location was plenty big, then came the re-branding of the store as North 40 Outfitters and the services they could provide...

  • Turner Happenings

    Diana Maloney|Oct 9, 2019

In last week's Journal you might have seen a photo of students at the Turner School searching the school playground for ladybugs. It was found that excessive ladybugs can mean either a sign of good luck, or a sign of a weather change. Well, it was 100% right about the weather change. Two days after finding over hundreds of ladybugs, winter showed up on the Big Flat. The children went from playing on the playground and collecting ladybugs to building snow forts. Snow amounts varied throughout...

Turner Students remember 9/11 events during flag ceremony: Although many of the students of Turner School were too young or not born yet, to remember the tragic events of September 11, the entire school met at the flag pole to pay their respects to those fallen victim to terrorists. The attacks killed 2,977 people and injured over 6,000 others, and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. The Student council of Turner School and advisor, Mrs. Elissa Zellmer organized...

  • Harlem Food Bank Yearly Fund Raiser

    Jack Siemans|Sep 4, 2019

Beginning the 1st of September until the 31st of October the Harlem Food Bank will be conducting their Drive for Fund Raising for the year. We will be trying to raise enough to match the $2000.00 that the Town Pump Corporation generously offers to us. We have always been able to make the match and hope to do it again this year. Whether anyone realizes it or not or even wants to admit it, there are hungry people in the world. It is not unique to this area. There are many Food Banks in Montana trying to meet the needs of those who are hungry. It...

I do about 30 chin-ups at the gym several times a week. I don’t like doing chin-ups, and I couldn’t do them for many years. I’d try and try and couldn’t quite get myself up over the bar. Then, a crazy thing happened one day: I did one. After doing one, I found that doing a second one was easier. In the space of a few weeks, I jumped from none to more than a dozen. I didn’t develop some supernatural strength or find a new training program. What changed was that I figured out that I could do chin-ups. Before I did my first one, I never believed I...

So much to say and so little room. First, we have yarn and lots of it. It is free or if you can make a donation that would be great. If you do not have any idea of what to make we can always use potholders, dish rags, etc here at the center and we could sell them for a fund raiser. Just ideas to consider. Then, the Center will need a new director as I have posted my resignation and will be done on August 23 last day. Please talk to and find that person in your sphere to come in and apply. The position is open until filled. Stop in at the...

There are some amazing things that happen in a small community when life does not go the way of expectation. Generosity of food in the name of full meals delivered to homes, money donations made on behalf of loved ones are a couple of things. There are so many things that go on behind the scenes unnoticed helping one another through the hard times. This small community of Chinook far exceeds the acts of kindness and generosity than many other communities. The Foot Clinic will be July 26. Call 265-4776 to schedule an appointment. The Hearing...

I am a procrastinator by nature. Though I’ve gotten better about it over the years, when I was in college, I turned it into an art. I began by waiting until a few days before an assignment was due to start working on it. Then as time went by, the starting point moved to the day before. Eventually, I began setting my alarm early on the due date and rushing through the work. There were times I would print up papers and run to class to turn them in with seconds to spare. As I have grown older and begun to look back at those days with a little m...

This morning, I read an interesting op-ed written by a woman who is a lawyer and mom. She talks at length about the difficulty she has in that role and the hard truth that she often chooses her work life over her family because it fits her priorities. She laments the fact that she skipped birthdays and phoned in her participation in her kids’ school activities because her work was more important. I disagreed with the author on several points, but found myself identifying with her perspective because the same struggle often plagues folks in m...

I am allergic to dandelions. Every spring, my lawn begins to grow, the dandelions show up, and I start to develop headaches and sinus problems. When it gets tiresome enough, I mow in an effort to beat them back. Every home owner knows that mowing won’t solve the problem. In fact, it can make the dandelion problem worse by spreading their seeds out. The new seeds take root and new dandelions sprout up. I could certainly solve the problem, but I don’t really want to put the effort in. The issue is the roots that sit under the surface. Cutting the...
