I read a story about CS Lewis years ago in which a friend asked him if attending church is a necessary part of following Jesus. In response, Lewis answered “No” and pulled a coal from the fire and placed it on the hearth. In response, he asked his friend to describe the coal on the hearth. The answer was the sort of thing you’d expect: hot, glowing, etc. The conversation continued before Lewis turned the conversation back to the burning coal and asked again for a description. This time, the answer was different: cold, dark, etc. As the coal...

In any case, it’s too late to put things together when the emergency is already upon you. Below you will find...

Last week we introduced you to September being National Preparedness Month. The easiest and often the most comforting thing to have in the event of an emergency or disaster is a communications plan. Not knowing where those most important to you are or what condition they may be in can lead to unnecessary panic that is very avoidable. Just follow these three easy steps and tips. 1. COLLECT. Create a paper copy of the contact information for your family and other important people, offices or services. A paper plan can be completed online at: read...

The fourth Annual Tristan Billmayer Suicide/Awareness Walk was a huge success on Sunday under the sunny Big Flat skies. The day was kicked off with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Turner/Hogeland Lions Club. The fantastic meal, which is a specialty cooked by these men on the Big Flat, is always looked forward to each time they host a breakfast. A large crowd took advantage of this specialty and were able to fill their stomachs before the 8 mile walk later in the morning. When the meal...
National Preparedness Month, recognized each September, provides an opportunity to remind us that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year. This year, National Preparedness Month will focus on planning, with an overarching theme: Disasters Happen Prepare Now. Learn How. From last fall’s snow storms and fires to this springs flooding, power outages and evacuations should be fresh in our minds. Although most hunters respect the land, property, and wildlife they are hunting, many others do not. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks would like to remind hunters and all outdoor enthusiasts to be good stewards of the land, and respect both private and public property. The FWP Region 6 Citizens Advisory Committee, recognizing that this is an ongoing issue, raised the need for more public outreach. Every hunting season, there are reports of vandalizing of Block Management Area (BMA) boxes,...

This week we have had a problem with some power loss that caused the air conditioning, the convection oven, dishwasher and hot water heater to not work correctly. Finally, after Brett Zarn, Schine Electric and NorthWestern Energy co-examined the problem it was found that we will need to have meters replaced on the outside of the building. They have temporarily fixed the problems so everything is working as it should. The date for this is undetermined, but we will be open as usual as we will have our gas stove working and will serve up soup and...

One of my favorite quotes from the boxer Muhammad Ali is about training: “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’” I have a good friend who says it a bit differently: “Training is better than trying hard.” The idea behind this is simple: the key to becoming good at anything is training. Exerting effort every day over the course of months and years accumulates into excellence that cannot be matched by putting effort forward in the moment. When I worked with kids in...
