I have written about this recipe for dressing or stuffing for many years now. I write about it for two reasons. First, it is the best dressing you will ever eat (I have people stop me on the street and tell me they have used my dressing recipe for years now and it simply is wonderful) and it is simple to make. Try it and you will never make another dressing. • You will need a couple sacks of seasoned bread crumbs • A cup of fresh chopped sage • A cup of chopped fresh rosemary • A half cup of black olives, sliced and drained • A half cup of gree...

  • LOOKING BACK IN TIME

    Robert Lucke|Dec 7, 2016

It is the beginning of December of the good year of 1909. Christmas is just around the corner and the big bird has already come out of the roasting pan and onto the plates of hungry Thanksgiving eaters as Thanksgiving is over and the loving work comes across of getting the right present for a loved one and the right Christmas tree to put up Christmas Eve for that was when they went up at that time. Of course there was depression just like now. People are people. I remember an old poem about what was thought about when in a depressive funk. It...

It is 1909 and quickly approaching the end of the year. Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is just around the corner. And yet there is news. Brace yourselves to become all agog and atwitter at the antics in this neck of the woods! Victor Griggs, late of Illinois arrived here last Saturday and assumed the duties of Chief Booster and official of publicity for Havre and the Milk River Country. Mr. Griggs was occupied Saturday evening in a meeting of the business men and Monday started out to learn everything he could about this area. He has...

There was a time long ago when the Dallas Cowboys were my team. I sort of started watching football with them and since I had a good friend who was always for San Francisco it made for sort of a wild and wooly rivalry to say the least. That was the age of Troy Aikman and the boys vs. any and all from San Francisco. It was the pre Joe Montana era at San Fran but they had some very good players including Steve Young, maybe their second or third best quarterback ever. Young is a part of the ESPN commentating crew these days. Well, Dallas coach...

Keith Hanson, owner of “The Blaine County Journal” says he figures I have been working as a writer for them for the last seventeen years. That would mean that this is my seventeenth Thanksgiving column for this good newspaper. You might think I don’t have much left to say but I do. First of all, Hurrah for the Turkey! You see, gentle readers, I have always loved turkey. It was the one meal that I was so very happy to learn how to cook myself. I know others feel the same way. In the grocery store last week a guy helping me out with my groce...

  • LOOKING BACK IN TIME

    Robert Lucke|Nov 23, 2016

It is almost the end of November of 1909 and those who want to know want to know what is happening in your bedroom at night. A person required 20 cubic inches of fresh air for each respiration or on the average, 400 a minute and in ten hours of sleep, he or she consumes 130 cubic feet of air. The air of a bedroom ten feet square and having doors and windows closed and occupied by one person would become unfit for respiration in four hours. In the case of two occupying the room, the time would be, of course, decreased to two hours. Keep your...

Well, we probably did enough to poor old 1907 to last a few years. Let’s move on to 1909 and see what we can find out about that interesting year. It is mid November and the subtle reader will notice that there are big differences between 1907 and 1909. The modern age is creeping up on those old Milk River towns that had been known as the blood buckets of the west. Civilization is coming and many citizens are more than ready for it! John Bailey received five hundred thousand black speckled trout from the government hatchery at Bozeman. They wer...

One summer I ended up with Ace Powell’s Franklin stove and some lucky cabin owner in the Bear Paws still has it in his or her cabin. Ace Powell had been commissioned by the Havre Federal Savings and Loan to paint some pictures with scenery of the Bear Paws and the Missouri Breaks. Uncle Al Lucke was to take Ace around so he could get some good ideas for paintings. I got to know Ace very well as every morning he would come into the Lou Lucke Company while I was working there and draw on little 3 by 5 cards to keep in practice. Then Al would g...

The headlines in one newspaper last week reported that Montana’s Dan Carpenter, the kicker for Buffalo was hurt due to officiating mistakes in Seattle, that Tom Brady is back and better than ever and that the Cowboys, with their new quarterback, Dak Prescott have built a comfortable lead in the NFC. Let’s take all three of those stories one by one. Dallas was 7 and 1 coming into this last weekend. This is as good as Dallas has been for a long time and the question going around in the minds of good Dallas fans is what happens when Tony Romo is...

I have eaten some strange meals with people who were drinking. I learned early on that a whole car full of whisky is not going to stop a good cook from getting a good meal on the table. It was just a matter of when. No names here to protect the innocent and guilty but one family I knew had the best cook I have ever known. Let’s just say they liked their bourbon but it did not get in the way of a great meal. I think that at their house they would have about a two hour happy hour and then feast on this great meal, mainly seafood, and then go f...

These are certainly strange times. This national election, which will be over by the time you are reading these words, is for both sides the worst I can ever remember in my life. To make matters even worse, it is November 7 as I write these words and I can hear outside of my office window, someone actually mowing their lawn! So, is it any reason that the Vikings have gone crazy in their first season in their new stadium? Remember not long ago they were running four wins and no losses. Well, this last week the Chicago bears with their 2 wins...

New books for your reading pleasure include “ Madeleine’s War” by Peter Watson. Colonel Matthew Hammond sustains a serious injury on the front lines in Europe that cost him a lung. Now he is back in England training new resistance fighters. One of the recruits is Madeleine Dirac, a French-Canadian nurse, and although against protocol, they fall in love. Now Matthew is torn about putting Madeleine’s life in danger even as he knows his unit will be needed to parachute behind Nazi lines. James Lee Burke’s latest novel is “The Jealous Kind.” Life...

One of the best ways to prepare squash is to cook it with bacon on the top of the stove. That way of cooking squash gives it a wonderful taste and is simple to do. Not only that but you can cook it ahead and just heat it up when you want to serve it. In the Lucke test kitchen I had wondered how that squash recipe would taste using applewood bacon. I see by looking at recipes that applewood bacon is used for a lot of things lately so I decided to prepare my squash using that bacon. I have not yet cooked the squash that way. I plan on cooking som...

There are many experts telling us what is happening in pro football these days. It used to be that there were three in the booth calling the game in the days of Frank Gifford and Monday Night Football. These days there is barely enough ego room for two to a booth. There are lots of innuendo, lots of prideful remarks and lots of thinking they are experts in calling whatever game they are calling. I laugh when I think of that because it is fun to go back to the old definition of an expert. Take the word apart. An ex is a has been and a spurt is...

I don’t know but I think that I started to collect ghost stories when I was very young. My fear of the dead and the collecting stories about them came about in several very natural ways as I look back and think about my jaded past. When my great grandmother died I must have been about 6 or 7. Not only did I have to go to her funeral but my mother said I should lean over the coffin and kiss great grandmother good-bye. I stayed awake nights thinking of how I would get through that horrible experience. So, I must have had some bad feelings a...

The Library Board of Trustees will meet today at 4:15 in the library meeting room. Local author Betty Billmayer will be at the library Thursday, Nov. 3 from 6:00-7:30 to sell and sign her latest children’s book “The Princess and the Pea...Nut Butter Sandwich.” Princess Pietra believes she will find peace if she can only have the perfect peanut butter sandwich. Although presented sandwiches from far and near, nothing satisfies her. Her parents help her realize perfect peace comes only from Jesus. Betty will do a book talk at 6:30 and refre...

I have been listening to the Dan Patrick Sports Show on the tube a couple of times this week and I must admit, I am shocked at what I have heard. There has been a lot of street talk about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. And, through the years, most sports pundits have stood up for him, saying what a good job he is doing. Well, since he got fast and furious into the discipline area of the NFL, there are not as many nice words flying around anymore. And, now that there are not the people watching the games this year and revenue is seen to be...

This is a tale about two outhouses. Why, you may ask am I writing about two outhouses when I should be writing about three at least! One I am not writing about was on a very famous ranch on Clear Creek where the owners built the outhouse right over Clear Creek so it had a permanent flush to it! Great but, not for the neighbors down the creek. My favorite of all outhouses was at the old school house cabin on Clear Creek where Henderson Creek runs into Clear Creek. It wasn’t such a great outhouse in the winter because it only had three sides. T...

We have some Prep standings both in Volleyball and in Football for last week. Let’s do Volleyball first. In Central A Havre is fourth. In District 2B Harlem is fourth. I don’t see standings for Chinook or the Thunderbirds. In the Frontier League Rocky is third and Northern is seventh. In the Big Sky Montana is fifth and Montana State is twelve. Here is how it looked last week in Prep Football. In Central A Havre is second. Belgrade is first. In 2B Harlem is fourth. In Northern C Belt is first followed by Great Falls Central. I spent the last part of September in Glacier National Park at Lake McDonald and it was glorious as usual. Miracle of miracles, Going-To-The-Sun Road was open and it was showing fall foliage like I have never seen up there ever. Not only that but where the large forest fire burned last year in the vicinity of Baring Creek, there are views and vistas showing that have never been seen from the road before. It is simply awesome! While there, we stayed in cabin 6 at the Village Lodge and the views looking up at the Garden Wall and adjoining...

“Heavenly Father, help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single parent who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with their children. Help us to remember the disinterested young person who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing their apprehension over final exams with the fear of not getting their student loans for next semester. Help us remember that the old couple walking ann...
