  • Now it's time to celebrate 'Old Christmas' - January 7, 2016

    Steve Edwards|Jan 6, 2016

Reporter's note: Twenty plus years ago my family and I were living in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Some new people moved next door to us and at Christmas we noticed they left their Christmas tree up until mid-January. Our daughter went to school with one of the neighbor's kids and learned the new family was Russian Orthodox. They celebrated 'Old Christmas,' which is a couple of weeks after December 25, more specifically January 6 or 7. I hadn't thought much about this until my wife went to seminary...

  • The wonder of snow

    Kay Russo|Jan 6, 2016

It’s funny about snow. No matter how often, how firmly, we tell ourselves that snow has nothing to do with Christmas, Christmas has nothing to do with snow, do we really, truly, deep in our hearts believe it? Being honest, I can’t say Yes. A boy or girl who wishes for snow at Christmas may be consoled if they get a bicycle or roller skates because at least they may be able to use the gift that day. If they get ice skates or snow toys of any kind, visible grass will seem almost a taunt. Some people in snow country are glad to get by without havi...

  • Needed: Pied Piper for Amtrak

    Steve Edwards|Jan 6, 2016

My wife and I had traveled out to the Seattle area, on Amtrak, to spend a few days babysitting our grandkids while our daughter and son-in-law made a brief pre-Christmas trip. We opted to take Amtrak because of the various weather threats, and we’re not big fans of crossing mountains with snow-packed roads. Turned out to be the right decision as both the Cascades and Rockies were hammered with snow both going and coming to and from the west coast. We’ve traveled Amtrak many times, first when we lived in North Dakota and would travel to see our...

  • Making resolutions

    Kodi Brown|Jan 6, 2016

Most make a list of resolutions at the beginning of the year. They make promises to themselves to change different things in their life. Most resolutions are made to try and better their lives. A lot of people don’t know the origin or how making resolutions started so I did some research and found some different information. Maybe the new information will give you guidance and a new view on how you make your goals. The Babylonians were the first to make resolutions history says. They made their resolutions in mid March and resolutions were m...

  • Harlem falls to Cut Bank, now 3-3

    Kody Farmer|Jan 6, 2016

If one thing is for certain in the District 2B girls' basketball race, it's that Harlem is becoming a team to pay attention to. The girls were in Cut Bank Saturday to take on the District 1B Wolves in a non-conference clash. Harlem carried a 3-2 record into the contest and were looking to start the new year off with a win but the Wolves had other ideas as they defeated Harlem 70-54. Cut Bank jumped out to a 19-10 lead after eight minutes. Freshman Skylee Dirden scored seven points in the...

The Thunderbirds got a three point basket from freshman Rayleigh Kirkaldie in the opening quarter to keep the team close as they trailed 10-8 entering the second. Junior Kenessa Shambo drained a long three in the second stanza but the Pioneers managed to extend the advantage to 17-13 by halftime. Kody Farmer|Jan 6, 2016

The Harlem Wildcats are still learning a new offense and defense installed by first year head coach Terry Kulbeck and it’s not because of effort that the team has struggled to find the win column more than once. Saturday in Cut Bank the Wolves managed a 59-32 non-conference win over the Wildcats. Harlem fell behind early and was never able to recover. The Wildcats trailed 14-0 after one quarter and 27-9 at halftime. The Wolves took a 59-32 win from the Wildcats, Senior Keahna Little scored 15 p...

  • What 'cher point?

    Robert Lucke|Jan 6, 2016

Last weekend was the end of the regular season for the NFL. That means that all too soon football will be coming to a close. I admit, this year there was too much to do to watch many bowl games but if it ends up that it is Clemson vs. Alabama for the championship, you can guess that I will be watching that one and rooting for Clemson all the way! Meanwhile in the NFL, this last week has been plagued by bad decisions by coaches and one coach already has been fired even though at the time the season wasn’t over. I watched the game where the P...
