USDA is providing Chinook with a $865,000 grant and a $789,000 loan to improve water distribution. The project will replace fire hydrants and valves, and construct a new bulk water station, improving the water flow and ability to fight a fire. Montana State University–Bozeman was recently named the number one school in Montana for 2020. Harlem Library The library is hosting guest speaker Bob Quinn Nov. 19 with a free supper at 6 P.M. with his presentation to follow at 7 P.M. Many locals know Ken Finley as "the guy who gives away pumpkins for Halloween from his garden." For the last few years Finley has invited anyone, especially elementary school students and their families, to come out to his pumpkin patch and pick a pumpkin for Halloween. The pumpkin patch is part of a large garden Ken has each year along Cleveland Road next to the Chinook Water Plant. Doris Jean Billmayer Egbert passed away on October 20, 2019 shortly after being diagnosed with brain cancer. She was born on October 4, 1933, in Hogeland, MT, to Roy and Mable Billmayer, the youngest of their five children. She grew up on the Big Flat and married Art Egbert in November 1950. They farmed together in the Turner area for over 40 years. She was involved with many organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary, the O.D.O Club, and Card Club, among others. Iona J. Schilling, 81, passed away due to natural causes at her residence on Wednesday, October 9, 2019. Wake services began at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2019, and continued until her rosary which was held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2019. Keith L. Benson (age 89) passed away in Helena on November 8, 2019. He was born to Ed and Cora Benson near Hogeland on September 1, 1930 - the youngest of ten children. When Keith was seven, his family moved to Harlem where he grew up and graduated from Harlem High School in 1949. He attended Northern Montana college for a time. Ed and Kathy Zellmer went to the Turner Junior High basketball games this week. Melissa Hiniker spent the weekend at Zellmers and attended the Jamboree in Rudyard with them. She returned to Cut Bank on Monday. The Catholic Youth will be collecting food for the Harlem Food Bank on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 10:30-12:30. Columnist's note: Forty-seven Hi-Line Travelers recently visited the Land of Enchantment with extended time in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Chinook Sugarbeeters saw their volleyball season come to an end this past Saturday at the Northern C Divisional in Cascade. Robin Allen, a CHS Educator has assigned each of her Junior high students in Exploratory Agriculture a noxious weed to research. Their job is to be able to recognize noxious weeds as well as educate others on how to eradicate and stop the spread of the weed.
