A group of students representing the Big Flat Chapter of the FFA attended the KMON Career Development Events (CDE) in Great Falls on January 18. They fielded teams in the categories of agronomy, livestock, and meats. The local PAWS shelter is hosting its first ever adoption event on Saturday, January 28 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at North 40 in Havre. "We had planned on holding adoption events previously, but Covid shut that down like everything else, so this will be our first ever adoption event," said PAWS Manager Alyssa Hewitt. The Chinook Rod and Gun Club's 4th Annual Ice Fishing Derby is set for Saturday, February 4 at Dry Fork Reservoir just north of Chinook. The Blaine County Fair Foundations' 4th Annual Brewfest is Saturday February 4 at the Blaine County Fairgrounds. This is a fundraising event that is meant to help make the Blaine County Fair the very best it can be. The Brewfest will get underway at 4:00 pm and run until 9:00 pm. Since the start of school in August, I have been passed by 22 motor vehicles as I was stopped along Highway 2 picking up or dropping off children with my red lights flashing. The Chinook Sugarbeeters continued their path through the schedule in dominate fashion. They began the week on Tuesday playing Hays in a makeup game postponed by weather in December. The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds found the win column once again this past Thursday as they travelled to Rocky Boy to take on the Morning Stars. The Harlem Lady Cats were in Cut Bank this past Monday playing the Wolves in a make up game originally scheduled in December. The Wolves jumped out to a 13-3 lead early on. The Lady Cats were working hard on defense and did a nice job of slowing Cut Bank down. On offense they just couldn't buy a bucket. The Turner Tornado boys and girls basketball teams both had a stellar performance at home this past Saturday. The girls picked up their first conference win of the season in racing past the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks 49-37. The boys opened up a big lead early and held on for a 54-48 win over the Hawks to even their overall record at 6-6. Friday, the Tornadoes were in Fort Benton taking on the Longhorns. The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and Harlem Wildcats continue to fight through a season that has had plenty of challenges present themselves along the way. Both teams are young with very little experience. Both are having to count on freshmen and sophomores to play varsity roles normally given to seniors. The Chinook and Harlem wrestling teams got a chance to show Blaine County what they could do on the mat this past Friday and Saturday. The Sugarbeeters hosted their mixer on Friday night and Harlem hosted the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday. Unlike football, volleyball or cross country the wrestling teams generally are on the road every week of the season.
