After years and two different sitting councils, the secretarial election was finally held after many trials and temporary roadblocks. Both tribes and the Assiniboine and Gros-Ventre voted and the vote passed by a count of 154 for and 99 opposed. Also, a secretarial election calls for 30% of the registered voters to participate. The actual percentage voting was at approximately 38%, satisfying the 30% needed. The election pertained to Fort Belknap encompassing the federally recognized Assiniboine blood of the Fort Peck tribes. This process is...
Blaine County Nurse This week the State of Montana Health Alert Network shared information regarding recent reports of severe influenza illness. Most people affected this severely have NOT been immunized with the annual flu vaccination. The circulating influenza viruses that have been noted by the CDC are “a match” to the strains covered by this year’s seasonal vaccine. Due to these findings, the Blaine County Health Department is again urging area residents to ensure they have received their seasonal flu “shot”. It is not too late to be protec...
Not yet. We’re still wandering around this beautiful campus looking for the art museum. These streets are not streets; they are simply beautifully designed and maintained brick walkways which students can march down ten abreast and not feel crowded. It is not clear where the walkway goes but it is not to the parking lot of the art museum. We’ll turn around here and hope not to back over any students or into the concrete posts that make it clear that we can’t drive any farther. The map of the campus seems to say that the art museum is just...
This is a month of columns to send away the winter blues. One thing I do to feel better about winter is to eat Oriental take out once a week. That all started many years ago. When I was working part time at the Lou Lucke Company I would go to lunch once a week with Willie Garrahan at Tommy Woo’s Boston Café. There the Chop Souy was unbelievably good! I would ask Tommy what made it so good. He always said it was the gravy. I believed him. Many years later Laened Black made Chow Mein that tasted like the Chop Souy at the Boston. I asked her fo...

Have you had the experience that you hear a song once or twice and it runs through your head for days, or weeks? It is not a rare occurrence, yet I have never heard or read an explanation for it. The hymn, “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” has been my constant companion for over a year. It doesn’t leave me alone. Actually, I am not sure I want it to. The melody is beautiful and the words are loaded with poetry and Christian meaning. They were written by John Newton who also wrote “Amazing Grace.” Perhaps it is the mental images the words...

Requests come to My Neighbor in Need in a couple of ways—sometimes a need is posted on the organizations website, other times requests come by phone. However a need comes, My Neighbor in Need tries to find a donor who can fill a need that has been verified. During the recent holidays an unusual need was received. A grandmother who has taken on the full time care of a grandchild with some physical challenges, made a request of a “used refrigerator.” For several months, including the summer, she had no working refrigerator. When her grade schoo...
