A scholarship is again offered by the North Central Montana Cattle Women and the North Central Montana Stock Growers. This annual scholarship is available to high school seniors and college students completing their sophomore year. Interest from a memorial fund honoring the memory of deceased members is contributed to by the Cattle Women. For the 18th year in a row Alexander (Zander) Blewett, III, a trial lawyer from the personal injury law firm of Hoyt & Blewett PLLC in Great Falls, Montana, has offered three $1,000 scholarships to the top student/wrestlers around the state of Montana for Classes “AA”, “A”, and “B/C”. On February 13, twenty-seven spellers from across Blaine County converged on Chinook High School's Lloyd Sweet Auditorium for the Blaine County Spelling Bee. After six rounds, Samson Sanders, an eighth grader at Chinook Junior High School (CJHS), was declared the champion, and Quin Billmayer, another CJHS eighth grader, had taken second place, designating her as the alternate. Gary Dean Hanson (88) passed away on February 9, 2024 after fighting with congestive heart failure. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service will be postponed until June 8, 2024 in Fort Mohave, AZ. Gary was born on June 10, 1935 to Vic and Verlie Hanson in Scobey, MT. George Von Boushie (Yellow Owl) began his journey to the Big Sands on February 10, 2024. George was the 7th child born to Richard "Johnny" Boushie, Sr. and Roberta Whitecow on September 18, 1969. The oral history project initiated by Blaine County Museum Director Samantha (Sam) French has officially begun. In a kickoff presentation to the Chinook Lions Club about a month ago Sam said, "It's been my goal to do an oral history collection since I arrived at the Museum. My hope is the folks who volunteer to do interviews will have contacts throughout the county." February is Black History Month, and the museum will be hosting Chinook’s Austin Haney to give us a special presentation on the Buffalo Soldiers in Montana. The Buffalo Soldiers were a United States Army Regiment that primarily comprised of African Americans. This past weekend, Chinook, Harlem, Hays/ LodgePole and Turner all took part in their respective District Tournaments. Chinook traveled to Conrad to take part in the 1B tournament. This is the first time Chinook hasn't been part of the 9C tournament in 18 years, and while it was not the atmosphere they may be used to for post-season action, that didn't stop them from finding success. The Saddle and Sirloin Club of North Dakota State University held their annual event, the Little International. This year marked the 98th Little "I", which took place Saturday, February 10th. The Little International Livestock Show is the largest student-run event on the NDSU campus involving over 300 students.
