    Steve Edwards|Jun 8, 2016

New York Street in Chinook was lined with emergency vehicles, the Sweet Park was packed with firemen, EMT's, law enforcement officers and a few 'gawkers.' Normally the only time that many emergency responders would be together would be some sort of regional training event or a major catastrophe. Fortunately, this gathering was for fun, but also purposeful. The event was a "meet and greet" organized by several local people involved with emergency services and law enforcement. Organizers...

  • Treasures New & Old; "Hog Today, Pork Tomorrow"

    Jun 8, 2016

The West, Wild or not, is generally a beef place but not much of a pork place. Well, I heard once that Irv has some pigs, but I’ve never caught a whiff of them or seen them or heard their squeal. In areas where the whiff from the barn is called “the smell of money,” pigs are called hogs. Pigs are more often heard of in This Little Pig Went to Market. There’s even a magazine called Hogs Today, for those who raise hogs in a serious way. So out West, to hear of a pig slaughtering is rather rare. As it happens, a pig slaughter is scheduled for eig...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Jun 8, 2016

If you are a Presbyterian the minister’s house is a manse. If you are an Episcopalian, the residence is the Rectory. If you are a Methodist like me, your minister’s house is called the Parsonage. It was in discussing our parsonage that I found that most of my church is not marching to the same drummer as I am. First, with an elderly and shrinking congregation, the large question that looms on my mind is whether we can afford to provide a residence for our minister. Would we be better off to provide him or her more money and let him or her fin...

  • Alert readers respond: story of Cowboy Mitchell shooting revisited

    Steve Edwards|Jun 8, 2016

Reporter's note: Well, the story I wrote about the shooting of Frank Mitchell, a camp cook, certainly brought responses from alert readers. The story ran in the April 13 issue of the "Journal" and by the next morning I had faxes, phone messages and copies of local history books waiting on my desk at the newspaper. Wow, I must have really messed up! Actually, the people offering corrections to the story did it in a gracious way, a way that made me thankful for more complete information about the...
