A typical warm and somewhat breezy July 4th made for good conditions for several local celebrations around Blaine County. There were family gatherings as well as more organized community-based events. In Chinook at mid-morning of the 4th, the 71st edition of the July 4th Races, put on by the VFW, did not disappoint. There was a good turnout as youngsters, and oldsters, battled for prize money and bragging rights. Local VFW Commander Ray Reid said he was pleased with the turnout and the weather....
A week before the Blaine County Fair kicked off, two 12 by 24 feet electronic sign boards were delivered and set up at each end of Chinook on Highway 2 (believe me, they are hard to miss). The signs are provided through support from the two Diamond level businesses that support the fair-Triple T Sales and Shipwheel Cattle Company. John Skoyen, Fair Board member who first floated the idea of using the signs, said, "This year we'll be using the signs to recognize the businesses and individuals who...
The 2017 edition of the Blaine County Fair opens today and runs this Wednesday through Sunday (July 16). The Kids' Rodeo kicks thing off, literally, at 5 pm at the grandstand arena at the fairgrounds. Other events fill virtually every day and evening until the final hurrah at 5 pm, on Sunday, with the Pig Wrestling event in front of the grandstand. Don Richman, Chairman of the Fair Board, said he believes, "This will be the biggest and best fair in several years." Citing the return of Cale...
When you ask the members of the Chinook High School Class of 1952 where the best place on earth is to grow up – the answer is a unanimous, Chinook, Montana. It is hard to believe that it has been 65 years since we crossed the stage in the high school auditorium proudly dressed in our caps and gowns and received our diplomas from Superintendent Walter Conway. His message to us was, "You have a long journey before you in this life. May it be a happy one." And for most of us our journey has been a...
My bedroom is a wonderful gallery of some of the best art that I own. It started out as a tribute to Grandma Moses. I love her art and through the years have collected seven large prints covering such subjects as winter scenes, Halloween, harvest time, and the Fourth of July. The Grandma Moses prints did not seem enough for that room. I have a lot of pictures of relatives; two buffalo head ducks that were mounted by Grandpa Lucke in 1925, a couple Pasma “Thinkum Happy People”, and some of my own art on the walls. Two of my favorite pai...

The first weekend in July Fr. Felix Nayak celebrated mass with three congregations he served after first arriving in Montana from Orissa, India in June, 2012. He conducted mass at St. Gabriel's in Chinook, St. Thomas the Apostle in Harlem and St. Thomas Aquinas in Hogeland. They were his second good-bye masses as he had said his good-byes last September when he moved to Malta to take on new responsibilities at St. Paul's in Hays, St. Thomas in Lodge Pole and Sacred Heart at the Agency. In...
Reporter's note. During the Fourth of July parade in Harlem I saw several folks handing out candy that I had never seen before. One of them, offering my wife a piece of candy, said something about a sports camp for kids. With no kids still camper age, we didn't really connect to what she was telling us. After the parade we ran into the same lady at the Harlem Senior Center. We began talking and we learned she was with a group of people doing soccer camps in Harlem, Hays and at the Agency. There...

I am just glad that it is not football season right now much as I miss the game. With this horrible July heat wave, it would be difficult to play football or any outdoor game that requires exertion. One would hope that when August rolls around, it will be more like fall than this very hot and dry summer. Not that we have not had these summers before. In the 1980’s there were several years that were dry in the mountains and out on the prairie. And for those following the story of the Little Rocky Fire, remember 1936 when practically the e...
LaVon Meyers from Box Elder came to Turner this past weekend to put on a two day basketball camp for children ages Pre-K to High School. Age group levels were set up on both Friday and Saturday. In the camp the kids learned an assortment of skills, defense, offense, ball handling, as well as some scrimmages. Grades 7-12 met twice on Friday for an intense but fun learning camp led by Coach Meyers. The students came away from this camp feeling that it was definitely a worthwhile experience. Coach...
