  • Farmers finally able to put up some hay

    Jul 17, 2019

How incredibly green it is! Can you believe it is July 17 and things look like this. This is certainly an uncommon sight for those of us who have lived here for many years. June was wonderful for moisture with some storms bringing rain nearly every day. There were a few that brought several inches at a time and thankfully there were very few that included hail. In early June some farmers had began their first cutting but wet fields prevented them from getting the hay put up, now in mid-July...

    Donna Miller|Jul 17, 2019

With the Blaine County Fair in the books and other fairs close to follow, local 4-H and FFA youth are encouraging Montanans to support them and their livestock sales. Not only will such a purchase be cost effective, shopping locally has multiple additional benefits, provided a person understands farm to table computations. According to a University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture publication, "How Much Meat to Expect from a Beef Carcass," the amount of meat actually available from a beef...

    Kody Farmer|Jul 17, 2019

When Glen Koster made his way into Chinook he experienced the highs and lows of walking across America. First he came across a huge Rattlesnake along the road, the first one he had ever saw, which left him at a standstill. A short while later a generous individual brought him a pink lemonade from Bikini Coffee. Glen and his wife Charlcie are in the home stretch of a two year journey across America, on foot, to raise awareness of the need for Foster Parents and Adoption. Glen himself is a foster...

  • Fort Peck Reservoir Chinook salmon egg collection and stocking looks promising

    Jul 17, 2019

Good news for Chinook salmon anglers: Fort Peck Reservoir and hatchery crews recently stocked record numbers of Chinook salmon fingerlings into Fort Peck Reservoir, with over 534 thousand being stocked this spring. Initially, the outlook from the fall 2018 egg collection efforts did not look very promising. Due to fewer mature females being present in the system due to limited stockings during 2015 and 2016, FWP Fisheries and hatchery personnel were only able to collect just over 110 thousand eggs last fall. On a positive note, with the few...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Seitsema|Jul 17, 2019

I am a procrastinator by nature. Though I’ve gotten better about it over the years, when I was in college, I turned it into an art. I began by waiting until a few days before an assignment was due to start working on it. Then as time went by, the starting point moved to the day before. Eventually, I began setting my alarm early on the due date and rushing through the work. There were times I would print up papers and run to class to turn them in with seconds to spare. As I have grown older and begun to look back at those days with a little m...

  • South of the Border, "The Lewis and Clark Overlook, the Marias River and the 'broken Mountains'"

    Steve Edwards|Jul 17, 2019

Column No. 22 Columnist's note: The Corps of Discovery never reached the Sweet Grass Hills. But Captain Meriwether Lewis explored much of the Marias River in southern Liberty County and recorded observations about the Sweet Grass Hills. During the expedition's westward trip in 1805 and the return trip in 1806, Captain Lewis' explorations along the river helped answer critical questions during the trip. Lewis himself named the river in June, 1805, in honor of a cousin, Maria Wood. Understanding...
