During the past two weeks, with unusually prolonged, hot temperatures, there have been a couple of infrastructure failures that caused water woes in Blaine County. The St. Mary Diversion is part of a system that moves water that ultimately ends up in the Milk River. About two weeks ago a small leak was discovered in one of two siphons in that system. Bureau of Reclamation officials are monitoring the leak and are hopeful repairs can be postponed until later in the year. Last week, a break in an...
Sunday afternoon of the Blaine County Fair is highlighted by the 4H/FFA Youth Livestock sale and for as long as one can remember the staff from the First Bank of Montana (previously Western Bank) have donated their time to the event. Pictured above are (L-R) Larissa Aiton, Jessica Aberg, Meredy Phares and Kim Ramberg, It's a big day for all those with an animal going through the ring and it takes the effort of many volunteers to make it happen, a big thanks to all those indiv...
As conditions deteriorate and drought expands across much of the Northern Plains, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is offering assistance to farmers and ranchers through numerous federal farm program provisions and continues to monitor the situation to ensure all viable program flexibilities are offered to producers. USDA’s Farm Service Agency announced that Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue has authorized emergency haying on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) lands beginning July 16 through Aug. 30, 2017 for counties in Montana, N...
There is a stretch on the calender where communities all over Montana are provided an opportunity to be more socially active than the rest of the year. That stretch begins for those of us on the Hi-Line in mid July with the start of the Blaine County Fair followed by the Great Northern Fair in Havre, The Phillips County Fair in Dodson, The Montana State Fair in Great Falls and concluding with the Choteau County Fair in Fort Benton August 17-20. Small communities along the Hi-Line go all out...
Reporter's note: Readers would have to be totally oblivious to their surroundings on Highway 2 this time of year not to notice a number of people on bicycles loaded with camping and travel gear. Most are heading east along a route that takes riders through this part of the upper Midwest-often called the "northern tier route." It's not unusual, in these summer months, to see a couple of cyclists eating ice cream outside a local shop, buying groceries or other items at the store or quick stop and...
Hasn’t this weather been tough on so many of us? Just hot and hotter and hotter and little or no rain and the National Weather Service says it is going to stay that way all through the rest of July. I was afraid to ask them about August. I can well remember going through drought periods like this before. Now, this is not really true but I once said that in the 1980’s there was a period of one summer what there was never a cloud in the sky. Never! Only the incessant sun day after day after day. Then in the 1990’s in another very dry perio...

Q: Sometimes I feel like God is very close to me, but then something happens and I begin wondering if He's even there. I wish my faith wasn't so up and down, but it is. Am I always going to be this way? A: No, you don’t always need to be this way—because God doesn’t want you to be this way! In fact, He has given you everything you need to strengthen your faith and help you know He is with you every moment of the day. Let me explain it this way. I note from your email that you are married—but how do you know? You know you are married because...

The Japanese art of flower arranging, Ikebana, continues to bloom in Chinook and northeast Montana where Ikebana has been practiced for 60 years. Allie Marie Uyehara who is originally from Chinook, brought the art back from Japan in the 1950s, sharing with the local garden club the lessons she’d learned at the famed Sogetsu School of Ikebana. Ikebana International Chapter No.8 began in Chinook in 1957, and remains the only club of its kind in Montana today. Its principles are that of Sogetsu: anyone can arrange flowers, flower arrangements can...
The 2017 Blaine County Fair is history. In many ways weather was the 'fair story' with hotter than normal temps, a couple of days of serious wind, a "crash bang" storm with very little rain as a result, then one more relatively cooler day with a mild breeze, but still with temperatures in the mid-90's. Don Richman, Fair Board Chairman, described this year's edition of the fair as "the best ever!" It was a year of several new features, a return of many old favorites and some expressions of new...
