  • Loaves and Fishes students visit Hartland Colony as 2017 summer feeding program concludes

    Steve Edwards|Aug 23, 2017

Loaves and Fishes concluded last week in Chinook. A staffer with the Chinook Schools System suggested, as a bonus for the kids, "The summer feeding program in Chinook could meet the kids in the summer feeding program at Hartland Colony." Both schools are in the Chinook school district and the principal at Meadowlark Elementary is also the principal at the colony's school. About 20 kids and chaperones boarded a bus for the 30-plus mile trip north to visit the colony. The Hartland Colony The Hutte...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Aug 23, 2017

I have to go to the doctor in Great Falls today. I am not looking forward to that but I am looking forward to stopping at Borries in Black Eagle on the way home and picking up some spaghetti sauce and meat balls that are to die for. Borries sauce is a very old fashioned spaghetti sauce and is as good as any I have ever eaten. Best of all I do not have to go to Borries to get great spaghetti sauce for Nalivka’s in Havre has it as well. They use a very old recipe and their meat balls are simply wonderful too. I think that spaghetti and meat balls...

This week we have a number of books from our patron's favorite authors. Sue Grafton is nearing the end of the alphabet! • Harlem Senior Center

    Katie Noel|Aug 23, 2017

The Senior Center has a dozen eclipse viewing glasses (so your eyes don’t go loopy), so let’s gather together around 10:00 am to take in this once-in-a-lifetime event. Best viewing of the eclipse for our area is from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Blaine County Museum Director Jude Sheppard said, "The post card was so dated that I was embarrassed that one old card was all I had to offer visitors who were looking for post cards of the town." She got Steve Helmbrecht, of Helmbrecht Studios in Havre, to take five new shots of recognizable points around Chinook. The photo on the prior post card was taken downtown,...

  • A little History on the Solar Eclipse

    Aug 23, 2017

Solar Eclipses happen when the moon moves between Earth and the sun. You might think that this should happen every month since the moon's orbit, depending on how it is defined is between about 27 and 29 days long. But our moon's orbit is tilted with respect to Earth's orbit around the sun by about five degrees. Not much, you say? Yes, but the moon, itself, is only about ½ degree in width in the sky, about ½ the width of your pinky finger held at arm's length. So, sometimes the...

  • It is my favorite part of the job: Covering all of our High School sports teams

    Kody Farmer|Aug 23, 2017

High School football, volleyball and cross-country teams throughout the class B and Class C began practice earlier this month and the first competition is scheduled for this weekend. One of the great joys of my job has been covering the local teams in our area for the past several years. • Miller happy to be back on the sidelines wearin' the Black & Orange, coaching football

    Kody Farmer|Aug 23, 2017

To say that Willie Miller is someone many people may remember competing on the football field or on the wrestling mat for the Chinook Sugarbeeters is a safe bet to those who have followed sports along the Hi-Line for even a few years. If you didn't see him play football or see him wrestle you probably heard something about him, some good, some bad, but he made an impression. Miller a 2010 graduate of Chinook High School returns to the sideline this fall as an Assistant Coach for the Chinook...
