    Steve Edwards|Aug 30, 2023

In early August sixteen Air Force veterans and friends, mostly from the west coast, came to Chinook and Harlem to visit the memorials for the fourteen airmen killed in an air collision north of Harlem. The crash occurred in the early morning hours of November 30, 1992. One of the visitors was a loadmaster (crew member responsible for loading and unloading cargo) on one of the four planes doing a practice refueling exercise in the pre-daylight hours. November 30, 2023, will be the thirtieth...

  • Old paddle wheel boat beginning a new lifecycle

    Steve Edwards|Aug 30, 2023

BCJ News Late July my wife Sherry and I stopped in Fort Benton on our way home from Great Falls. After walking along the river downtown we drove north along the highway (MT 387) that passes by Shep’s grave and the airport, then accesses US 87 northeast of Fort Benton. I did a double take when I realized the old paddle wheel boat that sat along the road for years was gone. I’d wondered about the deteriorating boat every time we passed through Fort Benton on our way home. I began inquiring wha...

    Alan Sorensen|Aug 30, 2023

Harlem’s varsity netters were a little slow getting out of the gate in their first game of the year, but they picked up their game as the Malta tournament continued. The Lady ‘Cats never posed a serious threat as they fell 10-25 to Chinook in their first game. The second game was a completely different story as the lead bounced back and forth among the in-county rivals until before the Sugarbeeters reeled off the last eight points to take the second game 25-17 and the match. About thr...

  • Wildcats fall in hard Fought battle against Poplar

    Alan Sorensen|Aug 30, 2023

The Harlem Wildcats' wild 64-36 loss to the Poplar Indians in Harlem Friday evening was a classic tale of two halves. Harlem took the opening kickoff and promptly fumbled the ball away to the visiting Indians. Poplar needed a short fourth-down carry to get its first score of the evening with 10:41 left in the first quarter. The extra point was good, giving the visitors a brief 7-0 lead. The Wildcats then capitalized on their first play from scrimmage, picking up a first down out near the 30 with...

  • Chinook falls on the road to Culbertson 18-8

    Aug 30, 2023

The Sugarbeeters got a bit of jump on the season after their Saturday afternoon visit to Culbertson was moved to Friday evening. The last-minute adjustment due to a conflicting volleyball tournament might or might not have had an impact on the final score. Nevertheless, the underaged and undersized visitors mounted a tough resistance. While giving up a single touchdown each in quarters one, three and four, the Chinook eight denied their opponents any points-after-touchdown. The ‘Beeter gridders accumulated 11 first downs in the contest and c...

  • Picnic in the Park" draws a crowd of seniors

    Steve Edwards|Aug 30, 2023

About 45 local seniors enjoyed a picnic in the park last Tuesday hosted by the Chinook Senior Center. A first of its kind event held away from the Center was well received and attended by about 45 seniors. The weather and mosquitoes (the latter eliminated with some help from the local sprayers) cooperated. The menu was fried chicken, potato salad and slaw. The main meal was complimented with a chocolate pudding dessert and plenty of cold drinks to keep the guests hydrated. The last couple of...
