  • East Fork Fire brings out the best of our local communities

    Steve Edwards|Sep 6, 2017

The East Fork Fire began late Sunday afternoon, August 27, on Rocky Boy reservation. By the week's end the fire had spread north and east to parts of Hill and Blaine Counties as well as Beaver Creek Park. At press time for the "Journal" on the first of September, the fire encompassed 15,000 acres, involved 160 firefighters and threatened 160 structures and much farm and ranch land. A Type I Incident Management Team was being assembled to take over management of the situation. Special Type I...

  • Chinook Chamber sets 'new' Farmer-Rancher Night for October 21

    Steve Edwards|Sep 6, 2017

The Chinook Area Chamber is bringing back Farmer-Rancher Night on October 21. The idea is to show appreciation to the farmers and ranchers for the economic contribution they make to local and area businesses. The concept follows a model used from 1970 to around 1996 by the chamber and local merchants. For many years what started Ag Appreciation Night attracted several hundred guests for a dinner and dance that sometimes lasted until 2am. Former and present ag nights were set in the fall after...

  • Be Aware of Scams!

    Sep 6, 2017

Criminals and opportunists thrive during natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey. Social media accounts and internet donation funds are ideal avenues for scammers to collect funds and information from people trying to donate to natural disaster victims. Scammers also use phishing emails, which, when opened, could steal login information, or infect devices with malware and viruses. Please research any organization that you wish to donate to. Do not open or reply to an email if you do not know the sender. Do not share or contribute to any...

  • Ranch rodeos are enjoying a growing fan base nationally

    Steve Edwards|Sep 6, 2017

Reporter's note: Since I first heard about ranch rodeos, three or four years ago, I've wanted to attend one. Recently my wife and I went to the Phillips County Fair, in Dodson, to see our first ranch rodeo. Locals say a ranch rodeo has been held each of the last several years in Malta but this was the first one held at Dodson as part of the county fair. I've learned fan interest in ranch rodeos is burgeoning nationally. The attendance at the combined ranch rodeo and Indian relay races at Dodson...

  • 'Wascally Wabbit' seems angry at gutter drain pipe

    Steve Edwards|Sep 6, 2017

Earlier in the summer "Bibbs" Pyette, from Houston, was visiting her mom, Mary Pyette, out at the family home on Coal Mine Road west of Chinook. Sitting on the front porch, Bibbs heard a commotion. When she checked it out a rabbit was head-butting a gutter drain pipe down the driveway. Later, Mary was able to photograph the rabbit using its teeth to pull the drain pipe away from the down spout. Mary's theory is that maybe the rabbit was looking for water. She said, "Whatever its reasons, the...

  • Eagle Scout project will allow gardeners a head start next spring at FFA's Community Garden

    Steve Edwards|Sep 6, 2017

Despite a couple of false starts about where he could build his Eagle Scout project, JJ Colby believes he can have everything done by the end of October. To gain the rank of Eagle Scout all requirements must be completed before the Scout turns 18 years of age. Colby will turn 18 in January, 2018. The Chinook High senior said of the greenhouse made from plastic bottles, "I think it looks great. It was a lot of work but it will be worth it." The greenhouse was erected on the back portion of the Ch...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

It is September and if it ever cools off September signals the beginning of fall and a wonderful time to start cooking those casseroles that you missed so much during the long hot summer. My version of Shepherd’s Pie I have given out the recipe before but it is so comforting, so delicious and so fall like that it is worth the work to put it all together. Consider Shepherd’s Pie to be a three pronged attack. First get a whole mess of the largest Yukon Gold potatoes you can find, boil them after peeling or leave the peelings on for that mat...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Sep 6, 2017

Don’t allow evil to cloud your perception of God Q. I don’t see how anyone can believe in God, especially in light of all the bad things that have been done in the name of religion over the centuries — wars, conflicts, oppression, hate, etc. We need to free ourselves from believing in God, because religion is evil. — H.J. A: It’s true that religion has sometimes been used as an excuse to commit great evil — tragically, even in our own time. The Bible warned that a time would come when “evildoers and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceivin...

Reporter's note: Ed Obie, Chinook Airport Manager, called to tell me a group of planes would be landing the next day at the local airport. He said, "You might be interested in seeing these planes. There'll also be some students coming over from Meadowlark." Later, Blaine County Undersheriff Frank Billmayer told me one of the pilots was his dad, Jay. I'd talked to Jay when I was gathering information about the old Harlem stock car track. A trip to the airport would be fun to see the planes and...

  • 'Beeters 4th quarter heroics lead to 18-16 win over Chester J-I

    Kody Farmer|Sep 6, 2017

The Chinook Sugarbeeters picked up their first win of the season this past Friday of the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks 18-16. The win evens the 'Beeters mark at 1-1. It seems as though every time the 'Beeters and Hawks meet on the gridiron fans are in for a treat and Fridays contest was no exception. The teams traded possessions through the bulk of the first quarter but the Sugarbeeter put together a nice drive late in the stanza that culminated with Chase Moxley's one yard touchdown run on...

  • 98-96? Thunderbirds fall to Stars in 8-Man Football home opener

    Kody Farmer|Sep 6, 2017

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds kicked off their 2017 football season at home this past Saturday welcoming the Rocky Boy Stars to town. The Thunderbirds and Stars are accustomed to playing games against each other where the score reaches 90, but those are usually in Winter during the basketball season. Saturday the teams combined for 194 points in a game won in overtime by Rocky Boy 98-96. The Stars led early 28-14 but the Thunderbirds kept clawing back. Moke Cliff scored late in the fourth quarter to give the Thunderbirds a 90-84 but the...

  • What 'cher point?

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

Prep football like all prep sports in Montana is changing. Schools are getting smaller and there are more and more who opt out of football or go to eight man which is much easier to fill than the traditional eleven man teams. Chouteau this year is going to be playing eight man football which is sort of shocking considering what the size of that town has been through the years. Then there is the case of Poplar High School who cannot play its varsity football schedule due to a lack of boys to field positions. They started out with seventeen...

  • Chinook School Year off to a GREAT Start

    Darin Hannum|Sep 6, 2017

Chinook Public Schools is off to a great start. Our enrollment numbers are 207 students in the elementary, 62 in the middle school and 107 in the High School. Over the last three years we have witnessed a drop of thirty students in the High School. We have had a small growth in the elementary which at this time is filled close to the maximum per class students that we can accommodate in some grade levels. Our staff turnover was very low from last year as we welcome one new teacher, Marcel Top Sky, in the art program and Krista Drugge in the Kit...
