  • When RFD sneezes Main Street catches cold

    Steve Edwards|Sep 7, 2016

Reporter’s note: In late August wheat prices in Blaine County had decreased to a point where loan deficiency payments under the 2014 Farm Bill would be available to producers selling their wheat. That was a sign that farm commodity prices were in trouble for this harvest season. Beef prices were also in a decline after several years of healthy markets. Living in town, I wondered if this decline in prices for wheat and beef had any effect on those of us with no direct connection to agriculture. What I found, talking to several locals connected t...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Sep 7, 2016

Here is a perfect dish for a fall casserole that can be cooked best in a Dutch oven on the top of your stove. It is called Chicken in the Bog and I think I first heard the recipe from the Food Network. I think this is one of the best chicken recipes ever but you must use only Zatarain’s Dirty Rice for the rice in the dish. And, remember the rice is the bog so it needs to be wet. Dry rice ruins this dish. You will need • 1 cup of cubed ham or Polish sausage cut into half rounds • 3 chicken thighs • 1 red pepper, medium dice • 1 onion, medium di...

  • Blaine County Budget: What is essential?

    Steve Edwards|Sep 7, 2016

For three weeks the Blaine County Commissioners have been asking county departments “What is essential?” Declining non-tax revenues, sources of funding over which the county has no control, resulted in a $1.4 million shortfall that made putting together the 2016-2017 county budget a challenge for the commissioners and county departments. After budget meetings with every county department and providing an opportunity for citizens to view and comment on the proposed budget, the commissioners officially approved the final budget on Wednesday of...

  • What 'Cher Point?

    robert Lucke|Sep 7, 2016

Several things happened this week in the wonderful world of football that were mildly disturbing. Colin Kaepernick would not stand for the National Anthem during two pre season football games. While most thought he was protesting the flag, it seems that was not the case. He was protesting police brutality to other than the white race. One day to further show his displeasure with the police, he wore sox that had pigs on them wearing police caps. At this writing another team mate has joined Kaepernick’s protest from the San Francisco 49er team a...
