  • What 'cher point?

    Robert Lucke|Jan 6, 2016

Last weekend was the end of the regular season for the NFL. That means that all too soon football will be coming to a close. I admit, this year there was too much to do to watch many bowl games but if it ends up that it is Clemson vs. Alabama for the championship, you can guess that I will be watching that one and rooting for Clemson all the way! Meanwhile in the NFL, this last week has been plagued by bad decisions by coaches and one coach already has been fired even though at the time the season wasn’t over. I watched the game where the P...

We've had a few husband and wife hunts that ended...

  • BEAR PAW Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Dec 30, 2015

It is the end of another year and, as usual, I am glad and sad both. I am glad that I made it through and it looks like I am going to see 2016. I am sad because it was a year that could have been so much better. Hindsight is always great and I learned a lot about having prostate cancer this year. More than I had learned in the twelve years I have had it. I went into the taking of chemo therapy as just another simple treatment. I soon learned that it is anything but simple. Five percent of people who take chemo for prostate cancer, get symptoms...

    Robert Lucke|Dec 30, 2015

The new lunchroom at the depot is open and being run by Mayor Newman. In addition to the counter, there is a very neat small dining room for ladies. The waitresses are dressed in black with white collars and cuffs. Mrs. O’Leary, the famous chef, has charge of the kitchen with a good corps of assistance, and the place promises to be well patronized. Editor’s note... When...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Dec 23, 2015

It is that magical time once again. For 74 years I have been experiencing it. Can’t explain it yet but I really do love it in spite of things going really wrong with the season every so often. A case in point is that one Christmas I heard of a woman who put a tiny manger scene on her stove so that when she was cooking, she would remember the reason for the season. I thought that was a wonderful idea. I bought two, one for a cabin and one for the house. I put them up on the stove for years and even looked at them and remembered. Then Mother a...

  • Christmas memories and struggles...

    Kodi Brown|Dec 23, 2015

My most memorable Christmas was with somebody who isn’t here today. Spending time with my Grandpa was always special but holidays meant something more to me even at a young age. The first year he wasn’t there was different. I kept expecting to see him but that wasn’t going to happen. Every year I wish things could be different so I could have just one more day with him. Sadly it doesn’t work like that and we need to make the best of what we have. Some people don’t get a lot of joy and it’s a struggle for them just to function in public. Thi...

The Harlem Civic Association's eleventh Country Christmas celebration was well attended last Wednesday evening. Strollers enjoyed a mild, but at times windy, evening for the annual event. In the library lobby, Civic Association chairman Brad Becker, and association member Jim Nissen, were cooking popcorn and handing out bags to strollers....

  • Getting a Christmas tree the old fashioned way

    Steve Edwards|Dec 16, 2015

Finding the perfect live Christmas tree can be a stressor each holiday season. With 25-30 million live trees for sale in the United States annually, there are a lot of choices. Then there are considerations of the type of tree needed, size of the room where the tree will be displayed, shape to fit in the usable space and even what variety of tree for the natural aroma desired. It's a lot of choices. It gets even more complicated when the tree is for a church and ultimately everyone gets to be a...
