  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Dec 23, 2015

It is that magical time once again. For 74 years I have been experiencing it. Can’t explain it yet but I really do love it in spite of things going really wrong with the season every so often. A case in point is that one Christmas I heard of a woman who put a tiny manger scene on her stove so that when she was cooking, she would remember the reason for the season. I thought that was a wonderful idea. I bought two, one for a cabin and one for the house. I put them up on the stove for years and even looked at them and remembered. Then Mother a...

  • Christmas memories and struggles...

    Kodi Brown|Dec 23, 2015

My most memorable Christmas was with somebody who isn’t here today. Spending time with my Grandpa was always special but holidays meant something more to me even at a young age. The first year he wasn’t there was different. I kept expecting to see him but that wasn’t going to happen. Every year I wish things could be different so I could have just one more day with him. Sadly it doesn’t work like that and we need to make the best of what we have. Some people don’t get a lot of joy and it’s a struggle for them just to function in public. Thi...

    Steve Edwards|Dec 16, 2015

The Harlem Civic Association's eleventh Country Christmas celebration was well attended last Wednesday evening. Strollers enjoyed a mild, but at times windy, evening for the annual event. City workers had hung electric decorations along the main street and volunteer groups decorated each light pole to their chosen theme. The town looked festive. In the library lobby, Civic Association chairman Brad Becker, and association member Jim Nissen, were cooking popcorn and handing out bags to strollers....

  • Getting a Christmas tree the old fashioned way

    Steve Edwards|Dec 16, 2015

Finding the perfect live Christmas tree can be a stressor each holiday season. With 25-30 million live trees for sale in the United States annually, there are a lot of choices. Then there are considerations of the type of tree needed, size of the room where the tree will be displayed, shape to fit in the usable space and even what variety of tree for the natural aroma desired. It's a lot of choices. It gets even more complicated when the tree is for a church and ultimately everyone gets to be a...

Pre-holiday events are beginning to wind down in Chinook. There are school concerts and programs still to come, but soon the focus will be on last minute shopping, gatherings for friends and family and, finally, special Christmas Eve church services and family get togethers on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The final week of community events in Chinook was busy as the countdown to Christmas began. Sweet Memorial Nursing Home Bazaar Sweet Home hosted its 13th annual bazaar last Saturday. The...

The wines were donated by Sagebrush Flats Winery and the goodies were courtesy of Friends members. It was a fun evening, but there was a serious purpose. Nellie Obrecht, a co-chair of the Friends, explained the Friends...

You can find the answers on B7 in this edition of the paper. 1. In the song “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas,” you are dreaming of a white Christmas with what? a. your significant o...

  • What Christmas means to you

    Kodi Brown|Dec 9, 2015

While looking through old papers reading the different Christmas stories, I stumbled across one which I could agree with and relate to. Mrs. Lillian Weaver, of Davenport, Idaho wrote in December of 1965 her version of Christmas. I pulled just a few things she stated and gave my opinion. In her article she wrote, “Christmas is the thrill of an old fashioned sleigh ride on a white stretching road glistening with “snow” diamonds on a moonlight night.” When I was eight years old we had a team and a sleigh. Dad hooked up our gelding, Blaze, and too...

  • Follow up from readers to the four part series

    Steve Edwards|Dec 9, 2015

Reporter’s note: It seems any time I write a story about local history readers respond. The “Murder in the North Country” series that ran during October, 2015, generated several comments from readers about the series and some readers shared new information. I’ve summarized some of this information, just to give the stories a bit of new background on two of the murders. Murder of Harry Tubbs, 1912 Frank McDaniels was quickly convicted of the murder of Harry Tubbs. The murder occurred in early July, 1912, and McDaniels was convicted the followi...

  • Community Thanksgiving Dinner A Chinook tradition since the 1980's

    Steve Edwards|Dec 2, 2015

Jeanne Dalton has been shepherding the plans and presentation of Chinook’s annual Community Thanksgiving dinner for the past five years. In prior years, Jeanne and Ron Dalton relied on family for help in the kitchen. This year was different, Ron passed away in the spring and only one local son-in-law was able to help. Jeanne Dalton soldiered on. In an interview about the event she got emotional as she said, “The volunteers stepped forward and the event went very well.” Dalton said this year’s turnout was about average. Average is still pretty...

  • Hoon Squad: Part of a Chinook legacy

    Steve Edwards|Dec 2, 2015

When the 2015 'Beeters football team nicknamed themselves the "Hoon Squad," they tapped into a long story that surrounds Hoon Field. Hoon Field, the home field for Chinook High School's football games, was named after a local doctor, Dr. A.S. Hoon, a much beloved physician who lived and worked in Chinook from 1912 to 1955. Hoon retired in 1995, he and his wife moved to Missoula. The football team used a play on words, harking back to the days when goon squads were groups of tough characters,...
