While looking through old papers reading the different Christmas stories, I stumbled across one which I could agree with and relate to. Mrs. Lillian Weaver, of Davenport, Idaho wrote in December of 1965 her version of Christmas. I pulled just a few things she stated and gave my opinion. In her article she wrote, “Christmas is the thrill of an old fashioned sleigh ride on a white stretching road glistening with “snow” diamonds on a moonlight night.” When I was eight years old we had a team and a sleigh. Dad hooked up our gelding, Blaze, and too...

Reporter’s note: It seems any time I write a story about local history readers respond. The “Murder in the North Country” series that ran during October, 2015, generated several comments from readers about the series and some readers shared new information. I’ve summarized some of this information, just to give the stories a bit of new background on two of the murders. Murder of Harry Tubbs, 1912 Frank McDaniels was quickly convicted of the murder of Harry Tubbs. The murder occurred in early July, 1912, and McDaniels was convicted the followi...
Jeanne Dalton has been shepherding the plans and presentation of Chinook’s annual Community Thanksgiving dinner for the past five years. In prior years, Jeanne and Ron Dalton relied on family for help in the kitchen. This year was different, Ron passed away in the spring and only one local son-in-law was able to help. Jeanne Dalton soldiered on. In an interview about the event she got emotional as she said, “The volunteers stepped forward and the event went very well.” Dalton said this year’s turnout was about average. Average is still pretty...

When the 2015 'Beeters football team nicknamed themselves the "Hoon Squad," they tapped into a long story that surrounds Hoon Field. Hoon Field, the home field for Chinook High School's football games, was named after a local doctor, Dr. A.S. Hoon, a much beloved physician who lived and worked in Chinook from 1912 to 1955. Hoon retired in 1995, he and his wife moved to Missoula. The football team used a play on words, harking back to the days when goon squads were groups of tough characters,...

Four local artists hosted the Chinook Area Chamber's recent November Business After Hours at the Blaine County Library meeting room. The four artists exhibited some of their work and greeted visitors. Each artist had a table with examples of their varied artistic styles. Cory Couturier was asked to host the Business After Hours event for November. He said, "I knew of several other artists and decided to invite them to participate as well." Reporter's note: Betty Billmayer, of Chinook, emailed and asked if I'd like to attend the 95th birthday party for Frank Pherson, Sr. The birthday party was to be held on a Monday night, the regular meeting night of Pherson's poker club, and would be held prior to the weekly game. I was out of town but promised I would follow up on the story when I got home. I did follow up and discovered an interesting history of two poker clubs that both began in the early 1940's. Here's a synopsis of 70+...

Reporter's note: Charles E. Morris was a photographer in the late 1800's-early 1900's. For a time he had a studio on Indiana Street in Chinook. He was a cowboy turned self-taught photographer who set about to capture life on the open range. He recognized he was seeing the end of an era and photographed much of the range area, and its people, in our part of the country. One of his granddaughters,Diana Morris Mann, was recently in Chinook and our publishers bought a copy of a book she was selling...
Reporter's note: This is the last story of the 'murder in north country' series. It was a double homicide and all three people involved lived outside Blaine County, but one had a connection that was important in the eventual capture of the perpetrator. Nancy Mahns, the granddaughter of former Blaine County Sheriff Dan Hay and niece of former Harlem Police Chief Blaine Hay, got me interested in this double murder. Mahns sent a copy of a July, 1953 issue of "Official Detective Stories." The...
