The Harlem Civic Association's eleventh Country Christmas celebration was well attended last Wednesday evening. Strollers enjoyed a mild, but at times windy, evening for the annual event. Pre-holiday events are beginning to wind down in Chinook. The Friends of the Harlem Library group hosted a wine and cheese festival last week. Actually, it was more than just wine and cheese with two "groaning" tables of holiday goodies and treats to go along with multiple opportunities to taste, and bid on, some interesting wines. While looking through old papers reading the different Christmas stories, I stumbled across one which I could agree with and relate to. Mrs. Lillian Weaver, of Davenport, Idaho wrote in December of 1965 her version of Christmas. I pulled just a few things she stated and gave my opinion. Today, Dec. 9, the used book sale kicks off at the library from 12:30-7 p.m. The Harlem Civic Association will be giving away fresh popcorn from 4-7 p.m. during the Country Christmas. Jeanne Dalton has been shepherding the plans and presentation of Chinook’s annual Community Thanksgiving dinner for the past five years. In prior years, Jeanne and Ron Dalton relied on family for help in the kitchen. This year was different, Ron passed away in the spring and only one local son-in-law was able to help. Jeanne Dalton soldiered on. When the 2015 'Beeters football team nicknamed themselves the "Hoon Squad," they tapped into a long story that surrounds Hoon Field. Hoon Field, the home field for Chinook High School's football games, was named after a local doctor, Dr. A.S. Hoon, a much beloved physician who lived and worked in Chinook from 1912 to 1955. Chinook High teacher Doug Hayes is planning a second early summer adult ed trip to Washington, DC. For a number of years Hayes has been taking CHS students on an annual visit to the national capitol. This past summer, after several requests over the years, he organized and hosted a trip in which 26 local adults participated. The Turner School recently was privileged to have the honor of having Mr. Monte Yellow Bird, aka, Black Pinto Horse visit their school. He is Arikara and Hidatsa from the Three Affiliated Tribes Reservation in North Dakota. He came to the school and spoke to all the students K-12 through the entire week. Every year, Montana music districts 6 & 7 come together and decide, by audition, who their best band and choir students are. These students come together in late November and early December to perform. This year nine students from Chinook High School were selected to attend Honor Band and Choir in Choteau on November 30 and December 1. The annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is scheduled for November 26 with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner being served from noon to 2 p.m. at the Chinook Senior Center.
