A total of nine vehicles gathered in the parking lot of the Chinook Alliance Church on Easter afternoon, each one decorated in some way to celebrate the fact that, even though many things in the world have changed these last few months, the truth of Easter remains the same--Jesus Christ has risen from the dead and is alive today! The Sunday before, Palm Sunday, the Presbyterian folks had a similar "parade", driving around town waving palm branches out of their car windows....
Staff is still working, although our doors are locked. Staff has been deep cleaning and organizing the shelves, and painting the meeting room. Kelsey started a project last Tuesday that we’ve been trying to get accomplished for several years and she made great progress! In 2016 we had our yearbooks digitized by OCI and we received copies of the project on DVDs. The images and accompanying Meta data are now being uploaded to the Montana Memory Project. Years 1917 through 1954 of the Chinook Breeze went live April 9th and you can view them on t...

Like most every other organization in the country right now, the Montana Actors’ Theater (MAT) is in “wait-and-see” mode. According to MAT’s Executive Director, Jay Pyette, that status simply means that MAT is enthusiastically looking to the future. “Yes, things have changed, but we’re moving forward with plans and strategies and lots of new ideas. After all, the show must go on!” Pyette stated. The show that was slated to open before closures began and social distancing orders implemented, Mamma Mia will open as soon as the theater company rec...
The word beacon has its origin in Old English when its meaning referred to a signal or lighthouse. Beacons were used not only by ships and later by airfields as a warning or guidance system but as a means for carrying news. A fire or light set up in a high or prominent position could also provide a sign of celebration. Since the 1600s, the word beacon has figuratively referred to a person or thing that illuminates or inspires. Drawing from these historical meanings, once a month, the Journal...
During early March my wife and I spent 11 days on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Oahu is the most populated of the state's islands and is the home to 1.2 million people, most of whom live in Honolulu. It was our first trip to Hawaii. I wanted to write about our visit without doing a standard travelogue. Oh, we visited many of the popular sites like Pearl Harbor, the Polynesian Cultural Center and with a friend, hiked to the rim of Diamond Head Crater. We did other tourist activities: a whale...

Calling all Chinook friends. During these uncertain times, there are some pretty lonely and bummed out kids. They miss their friends and their teachers and their school community. So how about we do something to boost the morale? Let's start a Beeter hunt for the kids. Put up your Beeters in front windows or yards so the kids can spy them on their neighborhood walkabouts. Every year March is designated Women's History Month by Presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women's contributions in American history. Women's History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a "Women's History Week" celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women's Day. The movement s...
Columnist's note: A couple of years ago I read about the annual March 16 celebration of St. Urho's Day in Butte. St. Urho Day celebrations occur in regions of the U.S. where Finnish immigrants live. The fact that it is celebrated the day before St. Patrick's Day is not coincidental. The idea of a St. Urho's Day celebration began when a Finnish American was chided by a friend of Irish descent who said, "Too bad the Finns don't have a saint they can celebrate." That remark resulted in Richard...
