Reporter's note: Late June my wife and I drove to Washington state for our twin grandkids' high school graduation. We stayed with friends who live in Warm Beach, a residential community north of Seattle along Port Susan. Port Susan is a bay connecting, eventually, to Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. Warm Beach was a great area to walk, especially in the early summer, with lots of giant evergreens, blooming flowers of every sort, spectacular views of the bay and some challenging hills to get...
Reporter's note: Readers would have to be totally oblivious to their surroundings on Highway 2 this time of year not to notice a number of people on bicycles loaded with camping and travel gear. Most are heading east along a route that takes riders through this part of the upper Midwest-often called the "northern tier route." It's not unusual, in these summer months, to see a couple of cyclists eating ice cream outside a local shop, buying groceries or other items at the store or quick stop and...

In the start of the twentieth century, the area papers stated how the Milk River Valley was prime ground for sugar beets. The paper also stated three things were needed to raise them, a farmer, a train and sugar beets. Thanks to the railroad, the farmer could raise large amounts of sugar beets in the Milk River Valley. They would plow the ground in the spring to a depth of 12 to 15 inches. The seeds came in a burlap bag weighing 100 pounds each. Some farmers that had flood irrigation would split the bag and use it to dam up the ditch. Most...

Plan to attend, "Home, Home on the Ranch: Farm and Ranch Life in Story and Song" by Bill Rossiter tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the library meeting room. Carving a home out of the "wilderness" or out of the "Great American Desert" was tough enough, but sticking it out, year after year, added flint to the soul. Drought, fluctuating markets, grasshoppers, dust storms, taxes-and of course, the...

I love to stay in rustic cabins. Matter of fact I lived in several rustic cabins during my life and they were simply great!
