Though a technology unfamiliar to many, the Blaine County Democratic “Zoom” meeting with Secretary of State Candidate on August 19 was a success, according to Democratic Chairman Greg Jergeson. Participants got the chance to visit with Senator Bennett, and as an added bonus, his mother Kathe McPherson, who grew up in Chinook. Most of the conversation revolved around the primary responsibility of the Secretary of State’s office to work with County Clerk & Recorders to facilitate every citizen being able to exercise their right to vote. “Whet...

Summer in Montana is generally defined in two ways. The first being, it starts the day the kids get out of school and ends the day they go back. For some that certainly is the case. For most though we generally associate the summer season to begin Memorial Day weekend at the end of May and end Labor Day weekend the first part of September. Monday, September 7 we will celebrate Labor Day and enjoy the final three-day weekend of the summer. Memorial Day weekend has a long and purposeful meaning...

Water is essential to everyone, and for those of us who call North Central Montana home it carries added meaning. Our area of the country tends to exist in drought conditions far more often than not. We are all aware of the importance of moisture to our local Agriculture producers, be it in the fields as the crops grow, or providing adequate water supplies to their livestock. Many of our local producers rely on irrigating to farm their land and many more draw from the Milk River to provide stabl...
Evelyn Cole did art in Chinook most of her adult life and is likely best known for her sculpture of famed western artist Charlie Russell (rejected as Montana's entry for the Hall of Statuary in the U.S. Capitol because Russell was sculpted wearing a hat). Cole did paintings, sculptures and unique pieces including two tents she decorated for local girls who attended the first ever national Girl Scout Senior Roundup in 1956. Evelyn Cole died in 1984. While working on a story about the mural...

Many of these were interviews; some had transcripts associated with them while others did not. Several of the interviews...
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, the U.S. Census Bureau cut the response period deadline early by an entire month disproportionately affecting the counting of Black, Brown, Indigenous and immigrant communities. The census determines the allocation of nearly $1.5 trillion in federal funds yearly for essential programs and is used to determine representation in the House of Representatives based on population. The move comes after the Trump administration released a memo in late July calling for the exclusion of unauthorized immigrants from the c...

This sign is among several that the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has erected as part of new load posting procedures on public bridges across the state as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Already subject to hundreds of regulations that apply to freight carriers and transport companies, many truck drivers expressed alarm at the sign. A loaded semi-truck...

A few days later a qualitative water sample test was positive for the presence of microcystin, a known liver toxin, at or above the advisory level for recreation. A post on the Hill County Health Department Facebook page states that research done by MSU-Northern found levels to be toxic high enough to pose health risks at Beaver Creek Reservoir. Bailey Reservoir as well as K...

On Tuesday, July 21, 2020 The Chinook community hosted the American Red Cross Blood Drive. It was a fantastic turnout. Our schedule was full leaving very little room for walk ins. We had 54 units collected on a goal of 37 with only one deferral. The Red Cross is now able to collect Power Red donations at our drives. If you are an eligible type O, B- or A- donor, consider making a Power Red donation. You give two units of blood and only give three times per year rather than six. If interested please contact Carla Jenewein at 357-8506 as there ar...

When I started with the "Journal" seven years ago, the newspaper was located in the building where Treasure State Title now operates in Chinook. Next door, south, in a one story building also facing Indiana Street, was a golf simulator in the front portion and a private wood shop and a few storage units in the rear. That back door still has a painted sign that reads "Kuhr's Entrance." I knew the locale only as the Kuhr's building. During my research on the Chinook Opera House ("Journal" story,...
