  • They're back... Turkey vultures make annual visit to Chinook

    Steve Edwards|Aug 3, 2022

Alert "Journal" readers will recall a story I wrote back in 2017 about turkey vultures-the huge black birds often seen gliding over Chinook and its environs. I first noticed them a few years ago on the 'new water tower' in Chinook at the southeast corner of town. On a recent walk just before sundown I was in that area and saw a huge number of 'black dots' on the water tower from the railings around the tank to the lower beams and guy wires that stabilize the tower. Up close I counted about 20...

  • Mosquitos Kept in Check

    Donna Miller|Aug 3, 2022

The Blaine County Weed and Mosquito District (BCWMD) has kept a diligent fogging schedule that, along with several other variables, has created a mosquito-limited summer season for most Blaine County residents. Although foggers began their regiment in early June, ensuing weather events put their work on standby. Until such time as fogging could resume, crews were out spreading larvicide in an effort to mitigate the impacts of the first hatch. With the timing of the first irrigation, increased moisture, and rising temperatures, the crew was...

Keith said, "The Montana Wounded Warriors seem to be doing some great work. • Correction: .7 Acre Feet in second irrigation is incorrect

    Jul 27, 2022

As stated the new irrigation period of 28 days began on July 15 and will continue as planned through August 13. A early shutdown of water availability would only occur if conditions changed requiring a earlier turnoff. The Blaine County Journal and myself are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this error caused. Your understanding is greatly appreciated!...

Many people have commented on the blessing that mosquitos are scarce this summer. Others have noticed a decrease in bug splatter on windshields. Researchers confirm that these observations are not just perception; the decline in insect populations is real. Habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change are threatening insect populations worldwide. In 2019, Biological Conservation reported that 40% of all insect species are declining globally. While it may sound nice to live in a world with fewer...

    Kody Farmer|Jul 20, 2022

When spring started it was feared that the 1.3-acre feet allocated to local irrigators of Blaine County's five Irrigation districts would be all that local dry land farmers were likely to see. Good amounts of rainfall in June and July to date have allowed the Irrigation Districts to allocate another .7-acre feet of water to local farmers. Water began filling the ditches and canals on Friday, July 15 to the delight of many. In a letter from the Bureau of Reclamation to the Joint Board they were...
