'Beeters roll into quarterfinals after thumping Culbertson/Bainville 80-16

The Chinook sugarbeeters began the 2015 Montana Class 'C' football playoffs with a resounding 80-16 drubbing of the Culbertson/Bainville Cowboys Saturday at Hoon Field in Chinook.

The 'Beeters forced five turnovers and recorded six sacks in an overwhelming defensive effort. The Cowboys mustered just 55 yards of total offense included a negative nine yards rushing on 15 attempts.

The 'Beeter offense racked up 383 yards of total offense including 289 on the ground.

Chinook scored early and often putting their first points on the board at the 9:24 mark of the opening quarter. Senior Kenny Pruttis found the end zone on a 9 yard pitch and catch from senior quarterback Ian McIntosh for a 6-0 lead.

The Cowboys first possession ended nearly as quick as it began with McIntosh intercepting an errant pass on Culbertson/Bainville's second play from scrimmage.

Three plays later the 'Beeters had again found the end zone, this time on a 45 yard pass from McIntosh to senior Jake Norby. The duo would hook up again for the conversion for a 14-0 'Beeter lead.

Senior Derek Bell thwarted the ensuing Cowboy possession with another interception giving the 'Beeters a pair of picks in their first four defensive snaps.

Junior Tate Niederegger scored on a nice 15 yard run the very next play to put Chinook on top 22-0 following a Bell conversion run.

The 'Beeters, having score three touchdowns in just 1:34, took a little longer to record their fourth score of the contest, but not that long.

Pruttis hauled in a 20 yard pass in the flat from McIntosh just three minutes later. Niederegger added the conversion to give Chinook a 30-0 advantage entering the second quarter.

The second stanza was much more of the same with the 'Beeters flexing their muscle defensively.

Seniors Kevin Young and Spencer Willman each recorded three sacks and senior Travis Hamilton recovered a fumble as the defensive line made its mark on the game.

Pruttis made his mark on defense as well with a interception of the tip midway through the second quarter.

Bell scored just three seconds into the second quarter from two yards and added a 30 yard run with 5:43 left in the first half.

Niederegger found the endzone on a 34 yard sprint and senior Owen Powell found pay dirt from ten yards out to push the 'Beeter advantage to 60-0 late in the second quarter.

The Cowboys returned the ensuing kickoff nearly 70 yards and were threatening to score when McIntosh stepped in front of a pass at the seven yard line then picked up a caravan of blockers and rumbled 73 yards for a touchdown to give the 'Beeters a 66-0 halftime lead.

Powell and the 'Beeter offense kept things rolling in the third quarter scoring twice more on runs of 36 and 11 yards to give Chinook a 80-0 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Culbertson/Bainville played hard and till the end mustering two scores in the fourth quarter to make the final score 80-16 in favor of Chinook.

Powell finished the game with 13 carries for 129 yards. Niederegger added 99 yards on 10 carries and Bell contributed 62 yards on six attempts as the rushing game netted over eight yards a carry.

Norby's 45 yards led the receivers, Pruttis's two scores covered 29 yards and junior Kyler Johnson made a great sideline catch for a 15 yard reception from junior Kade Friede.

Young totaled seven tackles, including the three sacks as did Norby and Niederegger.

McIntosh, Bell, Pruttis and Hamilton accounted for the five turnovers.

With still plenty left to accomplish this 'Beeter team remains focused one game at a time, "There's only eight teams left and we're one of them," stated Bell. "It feels great that all our hard work is paying off."

"It's been an incredible season. The whole team has worked hard to get to this game. I can't wait to play in it," added Pruttis.

"Our goal was to get back (State Championship), we got the first step done last weekend and now we're on to the second," McIntosh said later.

"Against Culbertson-Bainville we came out determined to get into the end zone quickly and once we did we never looked back. We executed very well offensively creating many scoring opportunities. Defensively we had a great team effort and never let them get their offense started," commented head coach Scott Friede.

With the win the 'Beeters will advance to the quarterfinals where they will face a very tough Ennis Mustang team this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The Mustangs (8-1) are a very capable team with their only loss coming in the regular season finale to conference rival Twin Bridges.

"Ennis will show us good balance on both sides of the ball. They have good speed, including one of the state's top sprinters. They have a quarterback that has not only hurt teams with his feet, but also has a good arm," added Friede

"Their running back has good balance and good vision, they have good size up front. The keys to this game will be to definitely contain their quarterback and control their running game. We have to get pressure on their quarterback and not let him have time to get the ball to his speedy receivers," concluded Friede.

Should the 'Beeters win they will have to travel for the semifinal round but a win there would have the State C eight man football championship back in Chinook for the first time since 2010.
