Veterans Day in Chinook: May we never forget freedom isn't free...

Chinook-area veterans were honored in a program held at the high school on Veterans Day. The program was hosted by Post 4620, Chinook's Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. Post Commander Ray Reid was the master of ceremonies for the annual event attended by junior and senior high students as well as the public. Perry Miller, also with Post 4620, assisted with the program. The program honored veterans through a number of presentations.

After presentation of the colors by the Chinook Police and the Blaine County Sheriff's departments, the attendees sang the "Star Spangled Banner" and recited the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Renella Hansen sang and led the group singing and Reid led the pledge. Rev. Dennis Findorff gave the opening prayer.

A group of ladies with the VFW Auxiliary did the draping of the altar ceremony. Elizabeth Hodgson and Aubri McCann, students at Chinook High, read patriotic essays they had prepared.

Doug Hayes, a CHS teacher, was assisted by Kyler and Kaylan Johnson, in a flag folding ceremony to explain the symbolic meaning of the 13 folds during a formal flag folding and presentation. Hayes stated the symbolism had no official status but was a custom widely accepted.

The Chinook High School Choir, led by Music Director Levi Williams, sang "America the Beautiful" and Hansen led the audience in singing "God Bless America". Pastor Findorff did the closing prayer and "Taps" was played by music director Williams. The colors were retired by officers with the two law enforcement departments.
