Veterans Day in Turner: Honoring and saluting our heroes...

The student council of Turner Public School, under the direction of Mr. Donnie Hutton, hosted the annual Veteran's Day program at the Turner School gymnasium. The colors were presented by the American Legion, Post #109 with math teacher, Mrs. Michelle Keller leading the national anthem with others invited to join in.

The crowd that consisted of students, faculty and staff, community, and Auxiliary members filled the gym with patriot pride and emotions as the students welcomed veterans and their branch of military from the Big Flat and surrounding area. The student council showed a short video that explained the pledge fully. They also played a clip made by Johnny Cash of an old tattered flag and its significant meaning to a small community just like ours.

The fifth and sixth grade class sung the army military song. The kids, under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Elissa Zellmer, did a fantastic job of reciting the patriotic song. They plan to learn the other branches of military throughout the year.

At the close of the program, the veterans stood up and the entire crowd went through the line and exchanged hand shakes and emotional hugs in appreciation of the commitment of their service of this great nation. The first and second grade classes colored a soldier coloring page and wrote a short message to present the veterans. Mrs. Elinor Warren sent small flags to be distributed to the young children. They were very happy to receive this wonderful gift.
