CHS's Hayes to lead second adult trip to DC

Chinook High teacher Doug Hayes is planning a second early summer adult ed trip to Washington, DC. For a number of years Hayes has been taking CHS students on an annual visit to the national capitol. This past summer, after several requests over the years, he organized and hosted a trip in which 26 local adults participated. This year's trip is tentatively set to leave June 6, or thereabouts, with eight days and seven nights in Washington.

The first organizing meeting for the 2016 trip was held last week at the high school. Hayes said, "So far I have one person committed for the trip. It's someone who made the trip last year and plans to go again." Two other people dropped by during the first meeting, one also a returnee from last year.

Hayes said, "This first meeting is typical-not many people know about the upcoming trip. It usually takes a few weeks for the word to get around that a trip is in the making. I'm not discouraged with the numbers at all at this point." He added the adult education program requires a minimum of twelve registered adults to assure a trip. At some point, early in 2016, Hayes will need to know how many people will be going as he begins to make plane reservations, order tickets to various venues, reserve ground transportation in Washington, reserve various side trip admissions and make hotel reservations.

He said this year, again, he planned some specific points to visit and would consider new ones, depending on the interests of those who will be going. During the first adult trip travelers visited the major sites and monuments in DC plus some side trips to Annapolis (the Naval Academy), Gettysburg, George Washington's Mt. Vernon home, Baltimore and Fort McHenry. Hayes added, "Traveling with adults allows for some flexibility, especially for evening outings. I'm okay with one group going to a baseball game while others take in a concert or other entertainment event." There will be a list of 'added' attractions that participants can see or do in addition to the activities that are done as a group.

Hayes estimated last year that the trip cost was about $3000 for a couple and $2100 for a single traveler in a single hotel room. Some side trips had an extra charge.

Because of Hayes' many trips to the capitol he knows the best places to visit at the ideal times and days of the week. His trips offer a major amount of information, places to see and activities to enjoy. Travelers even learn to master the METRO, Washington's underground mass transit system.

Travelers don't have to be in the Chinook School district to do the trip, last year several friends and relatives of travelers, from outside the area, also made the trip. It's a great way to see a lot of the capitol area in a short time.
