The Chinook wrestling program is still nursing a few bumps and bruises from the football season and took a limited number of wrestlers to the Havre Invitational this past weekend.
The season opening tournament is one of the premier openers in the state featuring several defending state champions from all four classes.
AA schools such as Great Falls High, CMR, along with Class A powerhouse Havre, make up the top tier tournament.
The ‘Beeters wrestled six and sure enough all six placed over the weekend.
Senior Jesse Dannels earned a runner up finish at 170 pounds. Dannels was strong throughout the tournament losing only in the final on Saturday.
Senior Derek Bell had a strong tournament finishing third at 160 pounds earning a 5-2 decision over Lewistown’s Chad Landers in the consolation final.
Senior Kenny Pruttis also performed very well in the season opening tournament as he picked up a third place finish at 170 pounds with a :37 pin of CMR’s Max Sechena in the consolation final.
At 126 pounds the ‘Beeters faced each other in the 126 pound fifth/sixth place match as freshman Ross Redd pinned teammate and fellow freshman James Buffington.
Sophomore Colton Liddle wrestled well finishing eighth at 132 pounds.
“The kids did real well, the senior did a great job. Overall I think the coaching staff was very pleased with what we saw,” state co head coach Robin Stroh.
“We definitely have some things to work on, but its a great starting point,” Stroh concluded.
Chinook will host it’s first home mixer this Friday. “The kids love performing in front of the home crowd, it fires them up and they wrestle hard,” added co head coach Perry Miller.
“The ‘Beeters aren’t quite at full strength yet but are headed in the right direction. The team will travel to Glasgow on Saturday.
