Chinook 4-0 after convincing wins over Hays/L.P., Big Sandy

The Chinook Sugarbeeters are off to another fast start as they improved to 4-0 following a pair of lopsided wins over Hays/Lodge Pole and Big Sandy this weekend.

The girls defeated the Thunderbirds 54-25 as the teams kicked off conference play in the District 9C. Saturday the 'Beeters made their home debut against the Big Sandy Pioneers pitching a shutout 57-0.

The 'Beeters got off to a fast start against the Thunderbirds as their pressure defense forced several turnovers and their transition offense turned them into easy layups at the other end to lead 19-0 after eight minutes of action.

The Thunderbirds are a much improved team and responded with a competitive second quarter that included a couple of three point bombs and a 12-11 advantage in the stanza to send the teams to halftime with Chinook on top 30-12.

The second half was a struggle at time for both teams while each found some success. In the end though it was Chinook that stretched their advantage in both the third and fourth quarters to secure a 54-25 win.

The 'Beeters were paced on the offensive end by senior Brooke Nicholson's 21 points. Junior Brooke Elliot was effective from the post position scoring 11 in the contest.

Sophomore's Abby Ellison and Carrie Hofer each added five for Chinook.

The Thunderbirds were led by the efforts of eighth grader Mulleeah Stiffarm and her 11 points. Stiffarm drained a pair of three point buckets along the way.

Freshman Rayleigh Kirkaldie continued to play well for the Thunderbirds chipping in eight.

The 'Beeters home opener against the Pioneers Saturday evening caused more than a few people to scratch their heads following a 57-0 Chinook win.

Chinook scored 12 in the opening quarter then added 26 more in the second stanza before finishing the contest with 10 points in the third and nine in the fourth for the 57-0 shutout.

Nicholson tossed in 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Beeters. Elliot added 12 points and six rebounds in the contest.

Junior Kelsey Mathon added six markers and four steals on the night.

Junior Taylor Neibauer played well as did junior Nicole McCracken and sophomore's Carrie Hofer, Sierra Swank, Abby Ellison and Erin Pula.

Chinook's game against Chester-Joplin-Inverness will be included in next week's edition of the Journal.

The 'Beeters will next return to the court January 5 when they welcome District 9C conference rival Box Elder to town. Three days later they will travel to Harlem before facing Turner January 9.
