Tornadoes struggle as conference play gets underway, fall to North Star and Fort Benton

The Turner Tornadoes began conference play this past weekend. Friday the boys traveled to Gildford where they were defeated by the North Star Knights 82-42. Saturday the Fort Benton Longhorns topped Turner 45-30 in their home opener.

Friday in Gildford the Knights raced out to a 22-8 advantage earlier. Turner picked up a three point basket from senior Bret Vanvalkenburg in the first quarter and five more points in the second but the team trailed 42-17 at intermission.

Things evened out a bit in the second half but in the end Turner was defeated 82-42.

VanValkenburg led the Tornadoes with 15 points while freshman Cody Welsh turned in a nice effort scoring 13 in the loss. Senior Tyler Humphreys added six markers in the contest.

Saturday in front of their home crowd for the first time this season the Tornadoes battled the Longhorns.

Turner nearly matched the Longhorns basket for basket early on as they trailed just 8-7 entering the second quarter.

Fort Benton put together a good run in the stanza taking a 25-12 lead over Turner into halftime.

The Longhorns extended the advantage in the third quarter to 39-19. The Tornadoes were able to get some shots to fall in the fourth quarter to trim the deficit to 45-30 by game's end.

Welsh again turned in a solid effort scoring 12 points in the contest. Sophomore Eddie Harmon added six points and Humphreys 5.

The Tornadoes fall to 0-4 on the young season but have played hard throughout each contest and will look to continue to improve as the season moves along.

Turner's game against Chester Joplin-Inverness this past Monday will be included in next week's Journal.

The Turner Tornadoes will return to the court January 5 when they travel to Dodson to take on the Coyotes in non-conference action. Their first home contest of the new year will be January 8 against the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds.
