Pioneers edge Thunderbirds 34-31 in District 9C action

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds nearly found the win column Saturday falling 34-31 to the Big Sandy Pioneers.

The Thunderbirds got a three point basket from freshman Rayleigh Kirkaldie in the opening quarter to keep the team close as they trailed 10-8 entering the second.

Junior Kenessa Shambo drained a long three in the second stanza but the Pioneers managed to extend the advantage to 17-13 by halftime.

Rayleigh, freshman Latasha Kirkaldie, freshman Talia Werk and sophomore Miquela Perez each scored in the third quarter for the Thunderbirds.

The Pioneers held a 27-21 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of action and the Thunderbirds were poised to make things interesting down the stretch.

Shambo and Rayleigh Kirkaldie knocked down four of five free throws and combined for all ten fourth quarter points as they were able to cut into the Pioneer lead but never were able to take the lead as the visitors took a hard fought 34-31 decision over the Thunderbirds.

Kirkaldie finished with 12 points in the contest while Shambo added 10 for the Thunderbirds.

Hays/Lodge Pole will continue with their District 9C conference schedule this week as the girls will travel to Turner this Friday and Fort Benton Saturday.
