The Chinook Sugarbeeters dropped their first contest of the season last Tuesday, 60-40 to the Box Elder Bears in a battle of District 9C powerhouses. The 'Beeters rebounded Friday by racing past Harlem 55-27 and Saturday taking down Turner 52-34 to improve to 4-1 in conference play and 7-1 overall.
Tuesday the Bears took command early as they outscored Chinook 15-2 in the opening quarter and never looked back. The Bears maintained a 32-10 advantage at halftime.
The second half was much more competitive with Chinook outscoring Box Elder 30-28 but the damage done in the first 16 minutes was enough to hand the 'Beeters their first loss of the season 60-40.
Junior Kelsey Mathon was a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe and finished with 16 points on the night while also recording six steals.
Senior Brooke Nicholson tallied fourteen points and four assists in the contest.
Friday the team traveled to Harlem for a non-conference clash with their former rivals.
Chinook controlled the tempo from the get go leading to a 23-4 advantage after eight minutes of action.
The two teams traded baskets for most of the second quarter but Chinook was still able to extend their lead to 36-14 by intermission.
The third quarter was similar to the first with the 'Beeters defense clamping down on everything that Harlem tried to do limiting them to just two points as Chinook took a 48-16 lead into the fourth quarter.
Harlem was able to get some things to work over the final eight minutes but the 'Beeters would win comfortably 55-27.
Junior Brooke Elliot had a great effort scoring 11 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in the win. Mathon turned in another solid effort with 10 points and six boards. Sophomore Sierra Swank added nine points and five rebounds to the 'Beeter totals.
Harlem was paced by senior Autumn Little Plume with seven points. Senior Brooke LeValdo and freshman Skylee Dirden each contributed six points in the contest. Anita Bentley grabbed six rebounds.
Saturday evening Chinook stepped back into District 9C play as they welcomed the Turner Tornadoes to town.
It was a defensive struggle early for both teams. Neither could find a rhythm offensively, which resulted in very few points and a slim 7-2 advantage for the Sugarbeeters.
After eight minutes of action the 'Beeter offense began to fire on all cylinders while the defense remained strong.
Chinook outscored Turner 21-6 in the quarter to lead comfortably 28-8 at the halftime break.
The 'Beeters kept the pressure on after intermission but the Turner girls were able to find a few cracks in the defense and get things rolling offensively a bit.
The 'Beeters held 46-19 advantage with the fourth quarter left to play.
The Tornadoes outscored Chinook 15-6 over the final eight minutes, closing the gap some. The 'Beeters would end up with a 52-34 win to improve to 7-1 on the season.
Nicholson led the Sugarbeeter charge with 19 points, five assists and five steals on the night.
Junior Taylor Neibauer added nine points, five rebounds and three steals while Elliot collected another 13 rebounds for the 'Beeters. Swank added seven points and five rebounds
Junior Ella Billmayer finished with 11 points for the Tornadoes while freshman Raegan Conlan chipped in nine.
Chinook will stay at home this Friday when they welcome the rival North Star Knights to town. Saturday the girls will hit the road to take on the Fort Benton Longhorns in a huge District 9C contest.
