The Chinook Sugarbeeters experience all sides of competition this past week.
Tuesday they fell to the Box Elder Bears 69-40. Friday they defeated a long time rival from the past when they took down the Harlem Wildcats 47-45 and Saturday they steadily extended a lead from start to finish in defeating the Turner Tornadoes by a score of 76-43.
Tuesday the 'Beeters spotted the Bears an early 9-2 advantage but a strong effort from freshman Issac Bell with seven points, cut the deficit to 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bears extended the lead to 28-16 by halftime and 48-25 at the end of the third quarter in securing the 69-40 win.
Freshman Cord Schneider lead the 'Beeters with ten points. Senior Ian McIntosh added eight. Bell finished with the seven points and 12 rebounds.
Friday old rivals from the District 5B renewed their rivalry as the Harlem Wildcats hosted the Chinook Sugarbeeters.
The teams may not be conference foes anymore but that didn't lessen each team's desire to secure a win.
McIntosh scored in the final seconds of the first quarter to give Chinook a 21-13 lead heading into the second stanza.
Wildcat senior Marcus Henry drained three triples to bring Harlem within five, 27-22, at the two minute mark of the second.
Chinook senior Travis Hamilton pushed the lead to 29-27 with a pair of free throws moments later.
Henry added a late three in the quarter to send the teams to halftime with Chinook holding a 31-38 lead.
Henry continued his hot streak opening the third quarter with another three point bomb to make the score 33-31 in Chinook's favor.
Junior Kyler Johnson answered with a nice drive to the basket, scoring off a beautiful pass from McIntosh to push the lead back to four, 35-31.
Henry again trimmed the lead to two, 35-33 as he scored 22 straight Wildcat points. Henry scored Harlem's final bucket in the first quarter, all fifteen points in the second and five points in the third to keep Harlem close.
McIntosh took a pass from Bell to extend the advantage. Bell then followed with a basket of his own off a dish from Schneider to give Chinook a 39-33 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Wildcat junior Corbin Brockie scored off a feed from Henry and senior Keahna Little added a floater in the lane moments later to cut the lead down to 44-39.
Brockie grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, trimming the lead to 44-41 but McIntosh would convert both ends of a one and one to give Chinook a 46-41 lead.
The 'Beeters would hold on and secure the tough 47-45 win.
McIntosh led the 'Beeters with 15 points and eight rebounds. Hamilton added 11 markers to the 'Beeter effort.
Henry finished with 24 points and seven steals for the Wildcats. Senior Michael Butterfly added eight points and eight rebounds in the contest.
Saturday the 'Beeters and the Turner Tornadoes took to the court in District 9C action.
Turner had an answer early to the 'Beeter attack, however Chinook still held a 20-13 advantage after eight minutes of action.
The 'Beeters extended their lead in the second but the Tornadoes wouldn't give up much ground as Chinook led 34-24 at the break.
The 'Beeters picked up their intensity on both ends of the court after the intermission. The boys outscored Turner 19-3 in the third quarter taking a comfortable 53-27 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Both offenses were effective down the stretch as the 'Beeters won the stanza 23-16 to secure a 76-43 District 9C conference win.
Bell had a stellar game connecting on 12 of 19 field goal attempts, including one from downtown for 29 points while also grabbing 15 rebounds in the win.
Freshman Cord Schneider added 12 points and six rebounds and Hamilton scored 11 and secured five boards.
Turner was led by sophomore Eddie Harmon's 14 point effort. Senior Tyler Humphreys added 11 in the contest.
Chinook will welcome the North Star Knights to town Friday night and will travel to Fort Benton Saturday to face the Longhorns
