The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds have battled their way back to an even record after picking up a pair of lopsided wins over the Turner Tornadoes 89-31, and Fort Benton Longhorns, 70-27 this past weekend. After an 0-4 start the Thunderbirds now sit at 4-4.
Junior Tyson Shambo knocked down a pair of three point bombs and scored ten first quarter points helping the Thunderbirds double up the Tornadoes 24-12 after one quarter. Junior’s Jace Shambo and Frank RunsAbove each tallied six the opening eight minutes.
The Thunderbird offense exploded in the second quarter as they erupted for 35 points in the eight minutes of action to take 59-23 lead into the break.
Jace Shambo scored ten points as did RunsAbove. Tyson Shambo scored eight more for the Thunderbirds and Sophomore Chance Main added five points including a triple.
Hays/Lodge Pole added 19 more points in the third quarter as Tyson Shambo, junior Elijah Blackcrow and senior Damon Castillo all drained long three-point buckets in helping extend their advantage to 78-30 entering the fourth quarter.
The Thunderbirds ran out the clock and secured a 89-31 conference win over the Tornadoes. RunsAbove led the way with 22 points. Tyson Shambo added 21 while Jace Shambo tossed in 18.
Sophomore Eddie Harmon led the way for Turner with 10 points in the contest. Freshman Tracer Heilig chipped in eight for the Tornadoes.
Saturday the team was out of the gates quick again taking a 23-9 lead after one and extending the advantage to 40-22 by halftime.
The third quarter was all Hays/Lodge Pole, both on offense and defense. The Thunderbirds outscored the Longhorns 26-1 in the quarter and coasted to a 70-27 win to improve their conference mark to 4-2 and even their overall record at 4-4.
Tyson Shambo drained five three-point bombs in the win and 22 points. RunsAbove added 21 for the Thunderbirds.
Hays/Lodge Pole will travel to Roy on Friday to face the Outlaws. Saturday the boys will return home for a huge District 9C clash with the Box Elder Bears.
