Harlem edges Shelby 40-37, earn first conference win, defeat Poplar 48-40

The Harlem girls varsity basketball team battled their way back to a 5-5 record following two victories this weekend, including their first in the District 2B.

Friday the girls hosted the Shelby Coyotes of the District 1B and earned a hard fought 40-37 win. Saturday the team traveled to Poplar where they again were victorious 48-40.

Against Shelby, senior post Anita Bentley and freshman guard Skylee Dirden combined for all ten of Harlem's points as they led 10-7 heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Cats were able to extend the advantage over the next eight minutes of action as seniors Brooke LeValdo, Emma Humphreys and freshman Autumn Eagleman each scored a basket. Senior Autumn Little Plume added three points to the total while their stingy defense limited the Coyotes to just four points providing Harlem with a 19-11 edge entering halftime.

The Coyotes came out firing to begin the second half outscoring Harlem 15-7 in the frame to tie the game up at 26-26 with eight minutes of action remaining.

LeValdo kept Harlem in it with all seven of the teams third quarter points.

The senior was instrumental down the stretch as LeValdo added eight more points in the final stanza, including one from downtown to help the girls secure a 40-37 win.

LeValdo finished with 17 points in the contest with all coming in the second half.

Dirden finished with eight in the win with four coming in the fourth quarter.

Saturday the girls were looking to pick up their first conference win of the season when they faced the Indians in Poplar.

LeValdo and sophomore Taylor Stiffarm each knocked down a first quarter three ball and Humphreys and Bentley each contributed a basket in the first quarter but Harlem still trailed 10-14 heading into the second.

The teams would match each others effort in the second allowing the Indians to carry a 23-19 advantage into the third quarter of action.

Senior Mari Ereaux drained a pair of long three point buckets in the third and LeValdo converted six of eight attempts from the charity stripe and eight points to help Harlem claim a 33-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Little Plume dropped in a triple and seven points in the triple and seven points in the final stanza to help the girls keep the lead and secure a 48-40 win for their first conference victory of the season.

LeValdo would again lead the team with 16 points on the evening. Little Plume added 10 while Bentley and Ereaux each contributed six.

"It was nice to pick up a conference win for sure. I'm really proud of the way the kids played both games," said head coach Laramie Schwenke.

"It wasn't pretty at times sure, but we had to come from behind in both to earn the win and that in itself is a big improvement and something positive for us to build on. It was a full team effort in both games and that was really nice to see," concluded Schwenke.

Harlem will host the conference leading Malta M-ettes Thursday and travel to Wolf Point Saturday to take on the Wolves.
