The Chinook Sugarbeeters continue to roll through the District 9C as they improved to 11-1 following a pair of victories over the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds 72-37 Thursday night and the Big Sandy Pioneers 50-18 Saturday evening.
The Thunderbirds gave the ‘Beeters more than they could handle early on.
Chinook senior Brooke Nicholson got the first basket of the game but the Thunderbirds got the next two with junior Kiara Shambo and freshman Latasha Kirkaldie scoring to give Hays/L.P. a 4-2 lead.
Chinook junior Abby Ellison scored off a feed from junior Kelsey Mathon and followed moments later with a offensive rebound for a score and a 8-6 advantage.
The Thunderbirds had an answer in the form of sophomore Miquela Perez and her presence around the basket. Perez’s offensive rebound and score tied the contest again at 8-8.
Nicholson drained a long three point bucket to give Chinook a 11-8 only to see Thunderbird freshman Rayleigh Kirkaldie go 2-2 from the charity stripe to send the game to the second quarter all tied at 11-11.
Junior Taylor Neibauer converted an old fashioned three point play following an offensive rebound for a 16-13 lead midway through the quarter.
The Thunderbirds took an 18-17 lead following a three point bomb from Rayleigh Kirkaldie.
Sophomore Sierra Swank answered for the ‘Beeters with a three point bucket of her own to give Chinook a 22-18 lead.
Rayleigh scored again to trim the ‘Beeter lead to 24-22 but Nicholson would score inside ans Swank would drain another three to extend Chinooks lead to 29-22.
Perez finished the half strong for the Thunderbirds converting offensive rebounds into points on back to back possessions to bring the Thunderbirds within three, 30-27.
Halftime was all Chinook needed as they came out with a full court press that completely stymied the Thunderbird attack.
Junior Brooke Elliot scored in the paint, Swank drained another three off an inbound pass.
Mathon made a defensive play and scored then followed with an offensive rebound for a score and the ‘Beeters were off and running.
Chinook led 40-27 before Perez got the Thunderbirds first points of the second half.
The ‘Beeters would keep up the pressure defensively with Nicholson recording three breakaway layups off steals to close the third with Chinook on top 58-29.
Chinook finished the deal in final stanza securing a 72-37 win.
Nicholson led the ‘Beeter effort with 24 points, six steals and four assists in the win. Swank added 17 points and seven rebounds for Chinook
Perez finished with 18 points and eight rebounds for the Thunderbirds while Rayleigh Kirkaldie added 12 points.
Saturday in Big Sandy Chinook led just 8-5 early but closed the half with a 21-6 run to close the half up 29-6.
Chinook would extend the advantage in both the third and fourth quarters to secure a 50-18 win and improve to 8-1 in District 9C play.
Mathon paced the offense with 14 points and four steals. Ellison added 10 points for Chinook. Elliot and Swank each chipped in six.
The ‘Beeters were able to utilize their entire bench over the weekend as all twelve players dressed saw action and contributed in both contests.
Chinook has a big week in front of them as they will host the Chester Joplin-Inverness Hawks Friday before heading to Box Elder to take on the undefeated Bears in a huge District 9C clash.
