The Hays Lodge Pole Thunderbirds looked to keep the momentum rolling Saturday as the team welcomed the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks to town for a big District 9C match up.
Chester J-I managed just a single point more in defeating the Thunderbirds 64-63.
After beginning the season 0-4 and suffering some pretty one sided losses the Thunderbirds have been on fire winning six out of seven to climb above the .500 mark for the first time.
The Thunderbirds had a great start to the contest leading 16-11 after eight minutes and 40-26 by intermission.
Strong three point shooting by the visitors spelled doom for the Thunderbirds down the stretch as the Hawks cut the lead to 56-46 entering the fourth quarter and outscored the Thunderbirds the final eight minutes 18-7 to steal the narrow 64-63 District 9C win.
Junior Tyson Shambo led the Thunderbird effort with 22 points. Junior Frank RunsAbove added 17.
The Thunderbirds will travel to Big Sandy Friday and host the North Star Knights on Saturday as the season begins to wind down
