We've Got The County Covered
The Chinook Sugarbeeters used a strong fourth quarter to get past a pesky Chester Joplin Inverness Hawks team 42-33 Friday evening. Saturday the Box Elder Bears started fast and the 'Beeters couldn't keep up in a 75-54 loss to the Bears.
The Hawks took an 11-10 lead after one quarter of action. The Hawks would push the lead to 18-12 before sophomore Abby Ellison scored off a nice pass from senior Brooke Nicholson and junior Kelsey Mathon scored off an offensive rebound to trim the deficit to 18-16.
The Hawks would again open up a seven point lead 23-16 but the 'Beeter's would close the half, strong as sophomore Sierra Swank converted from the charity stripe and Ellison scored again off another feed from Nicholson.
Mathon again would grab an offensive rebound and score, this time as the halftime horn sounded trimming the Hawk lead to 23-21 at the break.
Four points from Ellison brought the 'Beeters within 26-25 to start the third but the Hawks again would push the lead back to six 33-27.
From that point on the 'Beeter defense clamped down as they didn't allow the Hawks to score another point in the contest.
Mathon began the fourth quarter with a steal and layup before junior Taylor Neibauer scored off another offensive rebound.
Mathon followed with another steal, and layup added the one and Chinook was back on top 36-33.
Junior Brooke Elliot added two more baskets for the 'Beeters and Swank swiped a Hawks pass for an easy layup giving Chinook a 42-33 win.
Mathon and Ellison each finished with 10 points in the game. Mathon recorded eight steals in the win including seven in the fourth quarter alone to help fuel the comeback.
The Bears led 20-8 at the end of one and 43-24 at halftime as the 'Beeters never got going in a 75-54 loss to Box Elder.
Nicholson finished with 16 points in the contest while Ellison added 13.
Chinook will host the Harlem Wildcats Thursday and make the trip north to take on the Turner Tornadoes Saturday as the District 9C regular season winds down.
The District 9C Tournament is set for February 17-20 at the Havre High School gymnasium.
