The Chinook Sugarbeeter finished the regular season with a comfortable 54-32 win over the Fort Benton Longhorns Saturday night.
They began their weekend with a tough road loss in Gildford to the North Star Knights 39-30.
Friday in Gildford Chinook got off to a good start taking a early 3-0 lead on a three-point shot from senior Ian McIntosh.
Freshman Isaac Bell scored inside and Chinook was up early 5-0. Freshman Cord Schneider responded to three North Star free throws with a nice score inside and a pair of free throws to put Chinook on top 9-3.
Schneider's offensive rebound and score pushed the lead to 11-5. Junior Robert Smith converted twice from the charity stripe and freshman Rylee Kellam made good on a free throw of his own before Schneider put back another offensive rebound for a 16-5 'Beeter advantage.
Fouls trouble would slow down the 'Beeter attack and give the Knights momentum.
North star only made one field goal in the first half but drained nine free throws as Chinook held an 18-11 lead at the break.
North Star would knot the game at 22-22 as the teams entered the final stanza.
Unable to keep the Knights off the free throw line the 'Beeters would fall 39-30.
Schneider led the 'Beeter attack with 14 points and two blocks in the contest. Bell added six points and eight rebounds while McIntosh also grabbed eight boards.
The 'Beeters took a lead early against Fort Benton and slowly built on it throughout the contest.
Schneider and Bell scored four points each as Chinook opened a 8-2 lead. Freshman Brenden Edwards connected from long range and drained a short jumper extending the 'Beeter lead to 17-6.
McIntosh made a nice defensive play and scored and Bell followed with four quick points as Chinook pulled away from the Longhorns in the second quarter to lead 23-9.
Junior Kyler Johnson connected on a triple late in the third quarter off a nice pass from Smith to give Chinook a 33-19 lead.
Kellam scored five straight points to start the fourth quarter as the 'Beeters cruised to the 54-32 win.
Schneider and Bell each finished with 14 points. McIntosh finished with 10. Kellam and Edwards added five each.
The Sugarbeeters finished the regular season with a 8-6 conference mark and an overall record of 11-7.
The team will take the No. 4 seed into the District 9C Tournament which is being played this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the Havre High School gymnasium.
The 'Beeters will begin tournament play today (Wednesday) at 2:30 p.m. when they will take on the No. 5 seeded North Star Knights.
The 'Beeters, Knights and Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds all finished the regular season at 11-7 and split their regular season contests.
The District 9C will send its top three finishers onto the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls February 24-27.
