Chinook school board approves contracts, informed on security weapons in schools

Chairwoman Pauly Miller called the February board meeting to order. Board members present were Travis Buck, James Hodgson, Pauly Miller, Joel Pruttis and Viki Tilleman. Absent were Michael Copenhaver, Scott Gunderson, Ernie Johnson (all excused) and Keith Raty. There was no Student Council report.

Chairperson Miller read resignation letters from Judy Whitney, Rick Linquist and Shanna Flores. There were no comments during the public comment period. A consent agenda was motioned by the high school board to approve the January 12 board minutes, accept investment reports, approve activity warrants presented and approve electronic payroll and paper payroll warrants. Motion was approved. The elementary board motioned and approved payments of elementary paper claim warrants and electronic claims. Motion was approved.

Old Business

The full board motioned and approved the second reading of proposed changes in the accrual of sick leave by staff and certified employees. The elementary board motioned and approved the second reading of the proposed changes in the junior high travel policy.

New Business

Superintendent Hannam presented a compilation of information from schools that have voted both for and against allowing security weapons in their schools. Discussion followed regarding increased liability, staff relationship changes and training requirements/availability. No action was taken. Board motioned and approved student # 734964119 for early graduation. Student will meet graduation requirements at the end of the first semester of 2016/2017 school year.

The elementary board motioned and approved extracurricular contracts for spring, 2016, for Hope Hamilton, Junior High Track Coach and Mollie Rose, Junior High Track Coach. Superintendent Hannam affirmed this would be a shared position. Full board motioned and approved an extracurricular coaching contract to Emily Harshman as Assistant Tennis coach for spring, 2016.

Hannam recommended approval of an administrative contract, school year 2016-2017, for Elementary K-6 Principal/Teacher Jonathan Martin. The elementary board motioned and approved the recommendation. The high school board motioned and approved the recommendation of an administrative contract for High School 7-12, Principal/Teacher Matt Molyneaux for the 2016-2017 school year.

Superintendent Hannum recommended the board offer the fall, 2016 Head Football Coach contract to Scott Friede. Board motioned “to table hiring he head football coach for a special board meeting to be held prior to March 1 to allow the board legal determination on how to proceed with public comment regarding contracts.” The motion was passed with one ‘against’ vote. The board motioned and approved a recommendation to renew membership with the Montana School Board Association for school year 2016-2017.

A recommendation was made by the superintendent to approve TR-35 Certificates (proof of meeting requirements to be a school bus driver) to the following bus drivers: Brian Bauer, Adam Tilleman, Dennis Cross and Chad Surber. Motioned and approved.

A motion was made and approved to table the report on the Superintendent’s evaluation until the next board meeting.

Superintendent’s report. Mr. Hannam reported successes of the Speech and Drama Club at the state competition. Divisional competition was completed for wrestling and several wrestlers would be attending the state meet. Mr. Hannam thanked the neighboring communities/counseling staff for assisting with the bereavement of staff and student body.

Announcements and communications.

At Meadowlark Elementary, Mr. Martin reported a PTO meeting for Wednesday, 2/17 at 4pm, the Carnival/Spaghetti Dinner on March 11 and February is “I Love to Read Month.” He offered congratulations to fifth grader Levi Jensen as the school spelling bee winner. Twelve students will be competing at the County Bee rescheduled to February 16. Each month Meadowlark honors students with a ‘positive tickets program’ and the focus this month is cafeteria expectations. Hartland Colony students are completing their animal projects and novels and will be at Meadowlark on February 12 for testing.

Mr. Molyneaux noted the Spelling Bee is rescheduled to February 16. He reported many schools had shown support during the loss of a student and the focus at the Junior/Senior High had been getting through the week.
