Sugarbeeters finish season at 19-5, defeat the Valier Panthers 66-29 at Northern C

The Chinook Sugarbeeters concluded yet another outstanding season on the hardwood with a trip to the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls this past weekend.

The 'Beeters went 1-2 at the Northern C, defeating Valier Friday afternoon handily 66-29. They fell Wednesday evening to tournament champion Belt 65-24 and Saturday afternoon to Centerville 41-40 in other action.

In the 'Beeters opener with the Belt Huskies, Chinook scored the opening bucket. The Huskies however took control from that moment on.

Belt held a 18-5 lead after eight minutes, extending the margin to 33-13 by halftime.

The second half was much more of the same as the 'Beeters managed just 11 points, eight from freshman Kourtney Hanson and a triple from senior Brooke Nicholson. The Huskies took the opener 65-24 sending Chinook to the loser out bracket.

Hanson's eight points topped the 'Beeters while Nicholson finished with seven.

The team had Thursday off to gather themselves before taking on the Valier Panthers Friday afternoon.

Whether or not it was the day off, one thing for certain was the energy they took the floor with was at a much higher level.

The 'Beeters led 15-8 entering the second quarter. Nicholson and junior Brooke Elliot each connected from long range. Sophomore Abby Ellison scored twice and junior Kelsey Mathon added a bucket to propel the team to the fast start.

Chinook kept their foot on the gas over the next eight minutes outscoring the Panthers 21-8 in the frame.

Sophomore Carrie Hofer connected from beyond the arc and scored five points. Ellison added a couple more baskets, Hanson scored a bucket as did Nicholson. Elliot and sophomore Sierra Swank helped the 'Beeters take a 36-16 halftime lead.

Chinook triples from Hofer and Nicholson in the third quarter as they kept the offense rolling. Elliot added a couple of buckets in the paint giving the 'Beeters a comfortable 53-20 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Chinook would live to play another game as they finished the contest strong. Hofer connected on her third three of the contest, Nicholson and junior Nicole McCracken each scored twice helping the 'Beeters secure a 66-29 win.

Nicholson led the team with 19 points while Hofer added 13 and Ellison 10 in the win.

Saturday morning the girls took on the Centerville Miners in loser out action.

Centerville started strong defensively limiting the 'Beeters to a Swank free throw. The Miner offense was efficient scoring 11 putting the 'Beeters in a hole early.

The team would battle back though. After trailing 22-13 at the break and 34-25 entering the fourth quarter the team would make one last valiant push to extend their season.

Nicholson drained a long three and scored six fourth quarter points but the 'Beeters would come short by a single point losing 41-40.

Swank led the offense with 11 points. Nicholson scored nine in her final game and Elliot added seven.

The Sugarbeeters finish with a 19-5 record following their sixth consecutive trip to the Northern C Divisional.

The Sugarbeeters will say goodbye to senior Brooke Nicholson but will return the remainder of their roster.

Chinook has posted winning records the last six years and won at least 17 for five straight. The future looks bright for the program and 2017 will likely see them back at the Northern C again.
