We've Got The County Covered
The Spring sports season is upon us and fans of Blaine County athletes should have plenty to cheer about when the post season comes around in May.
The Spring sports season is short and teams pack as many dates into the schedule as they can. Most teams across the state are competing for the first time this weekend.
District and Divisional track and tennis meets are just over six weeks away and state B and C golf is only eight weeks out.
The Sugarbeeter tennis team is out to defend their Class B/C Tennis championship and will be looking to make it three in a row. Head coach Thom MacLean returns a very experienced team to get the job done.
Senior Brooke Nicholson has finished third in singles the past two seasons and will be considered one of the favorites to win it all this year. Also back is the state B/C Doubles second place team of senior Lauren Harshman and Cortney Gunderson giving the Sugarbeeters ample reason to believe a three-peat is possible.
Senior Hattie Niederegger is back and performed very well a season ago competing in doubles at the state tournament.
Sophomore Megan Pruttis and sophomore Sierra Swank both qualified for the state meet in singles and both earned points for the Sugarbeeters.
Also back this spring are juniors Nicole McCracken, Bailey Zumbrun, sophomores Erika Arnold and freshman Larissa Getten.
Chinook boys golf finished third at the Class C state meet last season and welcome back four qualifiers from last years state team. Senior Ian McIntosh, Senior Jake Norby and junior Kade Friede will join All-State senior Derek Bell on the links as the team looks to bring home a trophy for the fourth straight season.
Also returning for the Sugarbeeter boys are juniors Tate Niederegger and Trevor Reid, sophomores Tamer Jamieson and Jacob Huckabee along with freshman Ty Overcast and Chase Moxley.
Head coach Mike Seymour is excited about the potential of also qualifying a girls team this spring for the first time.
Senior Allie Skoyen competed at the state tournament a season ago and will be joined on the roster by several newcomers to the team including juniors Kelsey Mathon and Courtney Hofer, sophomore Carrie Hofer and freshman Ashley MacLeod and Maloney Young
In Harlem the tennis team continues grow. After one player in their first year they grew to four and now have nine girls on the roster and experience necessary to grow the program further.
Returning to the program for their third year are juniors, Jazzamyn Benson and Kinsey Cornell. Two seniors, Tylee Buck and Hailley LameBull are back for their second year of tennis. "I am looking to these girls for leadership especially since we have five new girls joining the team this year, sophomore, Cippy Gardipee and 4 freshman girls, Kelci Baker, Nakota Begay, Tamica Cole and Michael Anne Huphreys," stated head coach Kim Cornell.
The Sugarbeeter track and field team under the direction of head coach Paula Molyneaux and assistants Kelsey Harwood and Christian Lenhert have 22 kids out this spring with a good mix of veterans and newcomers.
For the girls state qualifiers return in senior Kailey Kleinjan, junior Taylor Neibauer and sophomore Abby Ellison.
Kleinjan has been one of the states top sprinters in recent years finishing in the top ten in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes a year ago. Ellison jumped extremely well last spring recording some the divisions longest jumps. Neibauer has helped secure the short and long relays the past three seasons.
Junior Brooke Elliot returns and will look to make some noise in the weights this spring.
Junior Rochelle Chaffin is new to the team as are freshman Rachel Gunderson, Kourtney Hanson, Lincy Johnson and Megan Molyneaux.
Thirteen boys fill out the Sugarbeeter roster and are led by state qualifier senior Kyler Johnson.
Johnson has been one of the Class C best distance runners finishing eighth at the state meet in both the 1600 and 3200 meter races.
Also back are senior Chase Lenz and junior Wade Schneider. Lenz runs distance races while Schneider really came on in the weights as the season progressed.
Sophomores include JJ Colby, Easton Henderson, Corey Morris, Steven Mulonet, Brandon Paulsen and Tristian White Tail.
Freshman out for the first time are Cord Schneider, Brenden Edwards, Ross Reed and manager Trajan Hannum.
All teams are expected to be action in the near future. Chinook tennis is in Havre April 5, Harlem tennis opens in Wolf Point April 8. Chinook golf is in Shelby April 5, Harlem golf begins April 1 in Shelby.
Chinook, Harlem, Hays/Lodge Pole and Turner Track will all be in Glasgow on April 2 to begin the season.
