We've Got The County Covered
Like much of the time I do not know the outcome of the Masters tournament at Augusta, Georgia. I love the Masters for several reasons. First, it is held when spring is in full bloom in Georgia. The course is beautiful with camellias and azaleas blooming all over and birds singing their hearts out in the trees about the course. The lawns are green with the first blush of spring and commentators like Jim Nance make it even better with their lavish descriptions of the settings and golfers.
President Eisenhower had a summer home right next to the golf course at Augusta and used it often. He loved the course and it was said that he loved it there no better than in early spring when it was so nice there compared even to Washington DC which could still be cold. Just a little way from Augusta President Franklin Roosevelt had a summer White House at Warm Springs. It was there he died on April 12, 1945. He said that the hot water spring at Warm Springs really helped his legs move the way they were supposed to. He too loved the early Georgia spring.
Lastly my great grandmother was named Augusta Behrends so whenever I hear of Augusta I think of that small but very nice German lady who help settle the country around here so many years ago.
At this writing Jordan Spieth looks to be driving down Magnolia Lane for a repeat of his win last year. I was hoping for a Bubba Watson win as he is one of my favorite golfers but it looks like no repeat there.
I don’t play golf myself but every since I watched “The Legend of Bagger Vance” I have become to believe that how you play golf is a metaphor of how you live your life. Golf really cannot be won so it is just how you play the game that counts. Life can be that way as well. What you do going through it vastly more important that the way it ends. So it is with golf. So it is with life.
I am not speaking very loudly about March Madness this year. My playing was abysmal! As I wrote last week, I had one team, North Carolina in the Final Four. Well, most of you know that North Carolina lost to Villanova in the final game by a score of 77 to 74. I can only do better next year. At least I hope to!
In the most awesome news of all, while Johnny Manziel was partying late into the night in Las Angeles, Denver was announcing that they were thinking of bringing him in as their backup quarterback to Mark Sanchez. That was as shocking as hearing that Ryan Leaf was Dan Patrick’s Masters Correspondent for his radio and television sports show. Matter of fact Dan Patrick tried to get Johnny Football and Ryan Leaf hooked up on air during the Masters so he, Leaf, could give Manziel some advice as to where he went wrong. If that doesn’t beat all, nothing will!
As implausible as it seems, that is my story and I am sticking to it. Go Thunderbirds!
