We've Got The County Covered
The tennis team finally got there season started last Friday, traveling to Fort Benton to take on Fort Benton and Boulder. On Saturday, the ‘Beeters hosted Chester J-I and Harlem.
Against Fort Benton, Chinook went 10 – 1 in varsity matches and were 5 – 0 in varsity matches with Boulder.
“Friday was a great day for tennis with no wind and temps in the 70s. We saw some good competition, and though I saw some early season rust and jitters, the girls handled it very well,” said head coach Thom MacLean.
Chinook’s number one singles player Brooke Nicholson, number two Megan Pruttis, and number three, Nicole McCracken were all 3 – 0 for the day. The ‘Beeters doubles teams of senior Lauren Harshman and senior Cortney Gunderson were 3-0 while the duo of senior Hattie Niederegger and sophomore Sierra Swank (2 – 0) were also undefeated.
On Saturday the ‘Beeters first faced Chester J-I. “The Hawks are a little low on numbers this year with only five players, but all five are experienced and solid players. We went 7 – 1 in varsity matches,” stated MacLean.
“I was especially impressed with our doubles play against CJI. Both of CJI’s doubles teams are experienced and good. The duo of Haley Erickson and Madeline Woods have been together for years and made at least two trips to the state tournament, so I was happy that both our doubles teams could get wins against them,”added MacLean.
In the afternoon Chinook faced the Harlem Wildcats were they went 9 – 0 in a mix of varsity and JV matches.
“Overall, I was really happy with the start to our season. After four long weeks of practice, it was nice to finally see somebody else on the other side of the net. There are always some things we need to work on this early in the season and now we have a better idea of where we need to focus our attention,” concluded MacLean.
Chinook and Harlem will be in Great Falls for the Fort Benton/Fairfield duals, one of the bigger events of the season. Both teams will be able to play and see be able to see a lot of different competition at that one.
