We've Got The County Covered
Almost as I am writing these words on a May Saturday afternoon, the Kentucky Derby is being run. It has attracted the rich, the poor, Royalty and most everyone else through the years.
It is the reason I started writing this sports column. Many of you remember the writings of Doris Johnson (aka FlazT) did in “The Journal”
Well, FlazT loved horses and she loved writing about them. Once in a column I wrote I referred to a horse as a nag. That really offended FlazT and she wrote a column in retaliation. As I got to know FlazT better, I found out that in most sports, the two of us were on opposite sides of whatever game was being played. I said to FlazT that if I wrote a sports column, she could answer it and that was how “Point/Counterpoint” was born. I always knew that if things were slow and there was a horse race anywhere and I referred to the horses as nags, she would get on her own high horse and write a scathing reply. It was fun.
Well, FlazT retired, I am still writing although goodness knows why and once again the nags are running.
There was a little more to report on the NFL Draft last week. Two Montana football players were drafted. Grizzly defensive end Tyrone Holmes will be playing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Meanwhile over in Bobcat Land Montana State tight end Beau Sandland will be playing with the Carolina Panthers. Congratulations to both of them! You do Montana proud.
Johnny Football, without a team at present, although it is reported that Dallas is looking at him, is going to be indicted for attacking his girlfriend in Dallas.
That is a new low for Johnny Manziel but has he sunk far enough in the muck to want to do something about it? Sounds like not yet even though even the likes of Montana’s own Ryan Leaf has reached out to try and help him. More about this sad saga to come.
I am sad because the Seattle Seahawks are one of my teams. They announced that the great Marshawn Lynch is indeed retiring from the football team. Lynch was a great asset to Seattle. He will be missed.
Meanwhile in Houston, the Texans released quarterback Brian Hoyer. They are putting all their eggs in the Brock Osweiler wagon it looks like to me. Osweiler can do the job but the question is can he do it yet. I think he will be a great quarterback but I also think he needs a couple more years to get there.
I don’t really report on Box Elder sports very much as it is kind of out of our readership fly zone. But I am proud of what Box Elder does in sports and academically as well.
So, this week when it was announced that Brandon The Boy was going to play basketball at Rocky, I was happy for Brandon and for Rocky as well. Then it was announced that Jerrod Four Colors is going to be playing basketball for Northern and that made me even happier for the both of them. Good going teams and Box Elder players. You will do well in both schools!
That is my story and I am sticking to it. Go Thunderbirds!
