Chinook tennis rounds out regular season in impressive form

The Chinook Sugarbeeter Tennis team was back on the court this past week to finish out their regular season as they played two duals, one at home and one in Chester. They then traveled to Choteau for their annual invitational tournament to wrap up the regular season.

Last Tuesday, May 3rd the Chinook netters hosted Harlem. The 'Beeters won 13 of the 14 matches played against the Wildcats.

Then on the 6th of May the Chinook tennis team traveled to Chester to take on CJI in a dual. The Sugarbeeters again came out victorious winning eight and losing only two varsity matches.

"CJI has a small team this year with only five players, but they are all solid, experienced tennis players, so it was a bit of a challenge for our young players," said Chinook Head Tennis Coach Thom MacLean.

Then finally the Chinook tennis team traveled to Choteau on Saturday to play in the Choteau Invitational.

While in Choteau the Sugarbeeters faced off against Choteau, Simms, Boulder, Whitehall, Harlem, CJI, and Poplar.

Again the 'Beeters played very well and won 16 of their 18 varsity matches.

Chinook stand out Brooke Nicholson remained undefeated in the year and took first place in the A Pool of singles, while Megan Pruttis took second. Pruttis is also undefeated in the year, except for when she has faced off against Nicholson.

The number one doubles team for Chinook also won all their matches during the weekend. Lauren Harshman and Courtney Gunderson took first place in the Doubles A Pool.

There was one slight change for the Sugarbeeters on Saturday as Hattie Niederegger switched to singles competition this weekend because of the absence of her doubles partner. According to MacLean, Niederegger played very well winning all three of her matches.

To round out the 'Beeters in Choteau was Jamie Roth who played well and finished the day with a 2-1 record.

"Overall, I was fairly happy with how we played. Every year this seems to be a weird time of season as the regular season winds down and the end of the school year gets closer," MacLean said. "Now we just have to find our focus for the next two weeks so we can hopefully attain the goals we've set for the Divisional and State Tourneys."

Chinook will travel to Havre this Friday and Saturday to play in the Northern B/C Divisional Tournament. Play will take place at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts located near Havre High School. Play starts at 9 am both Friday and Saturday.

After Divisional, the Sugarbeeter tennis team will look to defend their state title as they travel to Missoula on May 20 and 21 for the State B/C Tournament.
