Chinook sends 7 to State, Harlem 4, Turner and Hays/L.P. each qualify 1

The final weekend of the 2015-16 high school sports schedule is upon us as local thinclads take to the track and to the field as the state meets get underway.

After competing in less than ideal conditions at the Northern C and North/Eastern B Divisional last week. The Chinook Sugarbeeters, Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and Turner Tornadoes will head to Missoula to compete at the State 'C' meet Friday and Saturday. The Harlem Wildcats will be in Bozeman for the State 'B'.

The Northern C Divisional was held in Great Falls this past Thursday, the North/East B Divisional was also in Great Falls and was conducted on Saturday.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters qualified six girls and one boy for the state meet while the Thunderbirds and Tornadoes each will send one boy. The Harlem Wildcats will send four boys and one girl to the state meet.

Chinook sophomore Abby Ellison, Turner sophomore Eddie Harmon, Harlem junior Damon Adams and Harlem junior Reece Hutton all won individual championships at their respective divisional meets.

Ellison has done very well all season long in the triple jump for the Sugarbeeters and Thursday in Great Falls she recorded her best effort of the season. Her hop, skip and jump covered 33'7", good enough to win the event by 15 inches.

Ellison will carry the Northern Divisional top mark into the state meet where she enters with the sixth best effort in the field to date.

Adams had a huge day for the Wildcats and will compete in four events at the state meet in Bozeman.

Adams blazed his way through the sprints capturing the 200 meter dash with a time of :23.53 and the 400 meter dash with a fast lap of :52.56. Adams also garnered a second place finish in the 100 meter dash covering the distance in .11.58 just two hundredths of a second behind the leader.

Adams found his way to state in the field as well finishing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 18'11.75".

Adams 200 meter time is the fourth fastest entering the state meet. In the 100 meter race 26 athletes will compete with qualifying times only two tenths of a second apart top to bottom. The sprint races are known for their bang-bang finishes and Adams has done very well this season at the finish line.

Hutton set the Harlem school record at the North East Top Ten a few weeks back, eclipsing fifty feet at the divisional meet Saturday Hutton recorded a mark of 49'11" to win the event by nearly four feet.

Hutton enters the state meet with the third best mark in all of class B. He will also compete in the discus in Bozeman for the Wildcats after earning a sixth place finish Saturday in Great Falls.

Harmon has dominated the 800 meter run this season and followed a District 9C championship in the event with a first place finish at the Northern C Thursday afternoon.

Harmon finished the two lap race in 2:04.82 edging out his nearest competitor by a full second in a tight race. Harmon will head to the state meet with the seventh fastest time in the field. The competition at the state meets is great and the atmosphere often produces great results with athletes posting personal best at the event nearly every year.

Ellison, Adams, Hutton and Harmon all found themselves on the podium at the divisional tournament but their are several other local athletes with a solid chance to bring home hardware this weekend.

The Chinook girls 4x100 meter relay team enters the state meet with the sixth fastest lap in the state. The team consists of freshman Megan Molyneaux, sophomore Abby Ellison, junior Rochelle Chaffin and senior Kailey Kleinjan.

The quartet has been consistent all season long and qualified for the state meet at the North/East top ten with a split of :52.67. At the Northern C Divisional the girls finished third with a lap of :53.43.

Chinook freshman Kourtney Hanson found her groove in the 800 meter run at the Northern C and secured her spot in this weeks event with a solid third place effort.

Hanson completed the two lap race in 2:34.43, a personal best effort in the event. Hanson's split is just outside the top ten entering the meet and with her steady improvement week to week she could be in the mix.

Junior Brooke Elliot enters the javelin this weekend after qualifying at the Northern C with a personal best effort of 103'4" and a fifth place finish.

Senior Emma Humphreys has been a consistent representative for the Wildcats the past few years at the state meet. In Great Falls Saturday she earned her spot in the shot put field following a third place finish after recording a throw of 31'11".

Humphreys will look to cap a solid four year career in the event with a solid showing at the state B this weekend.

Chinook junior Kyler Johnson is the 'Beeter boys lone representative but he will compete in two events this weekend.

Johnson recorded a third place finish in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 10:41.06 and a fourth place finish in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:56.60.

Thunderbird junior Isiah RunsAbove will make the trip to the state meet in the 3,200 meter run as well. RunsAbove qualified for the state meet at the North/East Top Ten a few weeks back with a time of 10:25.20.

In Great Falls RunsAbove finished second at the Northern C, finishing the eight lap race in 10:33.35 to stand second on the podium for the Thunderbirds.

Harlem junior Tyus Hammett will compete in two events for the Wildcats this weekend. At the North/East B Hammett advanced to the state meet with a fifth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles covering the sprint in :16.97.

Hammett qualified earlier in the season in the high jump and enters the state B with a cleared height of 5'11" and joins a group of group of 13 entries just 1-2 inches out of the top five in the field.

Wildcat junior Corbin Brockie completed the triple jump at the North/East B with a mark of 37'6.5" to finish fifth in the event.

Brockie's season best effort in the event was recorded at the district meet where he soared 40'1" to capture the district championship.

The season comes down to one last run, one last jump, one last throw and if it happens on the final weekend of the season on the biggest stage then you have had a great year regardless of the outcome. Good luck to0 all our area athletes this weekend in Bozeman and Missoula.
