The tenth annual Harlem July 4th parade was led by a bagpiper. Dr. Hugo Michael Gibson, a chiropractor from Havre, led the parade while playing renditions of several traditional and popular songs. A native of South Africa, Gibson mastered the ancient instrument so he could play them, as a surprise, for his sister's wedding. Years later, he's still playing.
Harlem's July 4th annual celebration completed its first decade this past Monday. The summer event was one of the first programs put together by the Harlem Civic Association, a group of volunteers who promote Harlem and the surrounding community. Karolee Cronk, one of the event organizers, said, "It's interesting that in ten years we've had some weather issues during the picnic that follows, but we never had to cancel or postpone the parade in a decade."
